Meaning · English
Seeing his army being struck down, the great demon Chikshura, the commander, went in anger to fight the Mother. In battle he rained arrows on the Goddess, as a cloud rains water on the peak of Mount Meru. Then the Goddess, as if in sport, cut down that mass of arrows. With her own arrows she struck his horses and the driver of his horses. At once she broke his bow and his very tall banner. And when his bow was cut, she pierced his limbs with swift arrows.
Medhas is retelling a fight, so the plain story comes first. Chikshura is the commander of Mahishasura's army. He sees his soldiers falling and rushes at the Goddess in anger. He shoots a downpour of arrows. She cuts the whole mass of them out of the air, then strikes his horses and his charioteer, breaks his bow, brings down his tall banner, and wounds his body with fast arrows. Three words carry the teaching. Kopa is anger, and it is what drives him forward. Lila is play, from the sense of sport that needs no effort. Ambika means Mother, the name Medhas uses for her as the fight begins. Medhas says she cuts the arrows lilaya eva, in sheer play. The war that costs the gods everything costs her no strain. The comparison Medhas gives is exact. A cloud pours water on Mount Meru, and the mountain stays where it is. The storm is loud and the peak is untouched. Notice the order too: first the arrows, then the horses and driver, then the bow, then the banner, then the body. Everything he stands on is taken away step by step. Why tell it? Suratha lost a kingdom and Samadhi lost his family. Both are shaken by forces that seem far larger than they are. Medhas shows the Mother as the one force that anger and noise cannot move. The verses ask nothing of the listener except to hear whose power is being described.
A hailstorm rattles hard on a mountain boulder, loud for a few minutes, and when it clears the boulder sits exactly where it sat before, wet and unmarked. Chikshura's arrows are the hail, and the Goddess is the boulder: all the noise is his, and none of it moves her.
