Meaning · English

Rudras, Adityas, Vasus, Sadhyas, Vishvadevas, the two Ashvins, Maruts and the ancestors, Gandharvas, Yakshas, demons and assemblies of the perfected: all of them are looking at you, struck with wonder.

Arjuna is listing who he sees in the vision, and the list is long on purpose. It names the Rudras, a form of Shiv, then the Adityas, Vasus, Sadhyas, Vishvadevas, the two Ashvini kumars and the Maruts. These are classes of gods. Then come the ancestors, the Gandharvas, the Yakshas, the demons and the assemblies of the perfected. The line runs from gods to ancestors to demons to those who have already attained. Two words carry the weight. Vikshante means to behold, to look closely and keep looking. Vismita means struck with wonder, the mind stopped short by something larger than it expected. Sangha is an assembly, a crowd gathered in one place. Arjuna says every assembly beholds, and every one is in wonder. The word for all, sarve, leaves none out. Why say it? Arjuna is reporting what he sees, and he reports that nobody in the vision looks away unmoved. Gods, demons and perfected beings alike stand in the same astonishment. That is his view in this moment, and he is the one speaking. The commentators read the scene differently. Shankara takes the many beings as the one Self appearing as many. Ramanuja takes them as dependent on the Lord, who is their inner ruler. Madhva stresses that even the gods are far below him.

A school hall is noisy until a famous old singer walks onto the stage. The headmaster, the cleaner, the proud parents and the toddlers on the floor all go quiet and look at her. Nobody planned it. In Arjuna's vision, every kind of being looks at Krishna's form in this same way.

1. Tonight, step outside or to a window for three minutes and look at the sky. Put your phone down first. 2. Notice what your mind does in the first half minute. See whether the chatter slows. 3. If someone else is nearby, notice that they are looking too. Wonder is something people can share without speaking. 4. Next time a crowd goes quiet for something, a song or a sunset, watch your own breathing.

A man gets off a night train at a small station at four in the morning. The platform lamps are out, and the sky is thick with stars. A cleaner, two students and a woman with a baby are standing there, all silent, all looking up. He had been rehearsing an argument for his meeting, and it is gone. Arjuna's report points at this. In his vision, gods, ancestors, demons and the perfected all look at the same sight with the same amazement. Rank and nature do not matter for the length of that look. For the man on the platform, that means he is not alone in his smallness, and the stranger beside him is standing in the same astonishment. Ordinary experience agrees that great sights quiet the chatter of the mind for a while. Arjuna is telling what he saw, and the text presents it as his view. It does not promise that the wonder lasts, that the argument at the meeting will be settled, or that fear and grief will stay away once the sky is out of sight.
