Vast Form, Terrified Worlds

Bhagavad Gita 11.23

Meaning · English

Seeing your magnificent form, mighty-armed Lord, with its many mouths and eyes, its many arms, thighs and legs, many stomachs and terrifying teeth, all the worlds are terror-stricken, and so am I.

Arjuna is describing what he sees, piece by piece. Rupa is form, the shape something takes so that it can be seen. Mahat means great, and here it carries the sense of too large to take in. Karala means terrifying, a word for teeth set wide and fierce. Pravyathita means shaken, struck so hard that one cannot stay steady. Arjuna lists the many mouths, eyes, arms, thighs, legs and stomachs, and the sheer number is what overwhelms him. He says the worlds are shaken, and he adds that he is shaken too. This is his own report in that moment, not a general rule about God. Why does he say it? He asked to see this form, and now the sight is more than he can bear. The wonder of the earlier verses has turned to dread, and he says so openly. Shankara reads the form as the Lord's universal body, shown as Ishvara's power over all that exists. Ramanuja reads it as the real form of the Lord, with the world as his body. Madhva reads it as the Lord's true power, set apart from the beings who tremble before it. The verse asks nothing of the listener. It only lets Arjuna say what it cost him to look.

A child stands at the foot of a huge dam while the gates are open. The water is not cruel, but the noise, the height and the weight of it shake the child's knees. Arjuna before the form is that child: the sight is simply larger than the one looking.

1. Tonight, step outside for five minutes and look at the sky, or at the tallest thing you can see from your door. 2. Notice what happens in your body: a tight chest, a held breath, or a loosening. 3. Name it quietly as awe, fear, or both, without trying to change it. 4. Before you go in, take three slow breaths and let the feeling pass on its own.

A young father stands in a hospital corridor while the surgeon explains the scan. The words come too fast and too large. His hands go cold and he cannot hold on to one thought. The verse gives him something small and useful: Arjuna does not hide his terror or dress it up. He says plainly that the worlds shake and that he shakes too. In the corridor, that means the father can admit to himself that he is overwhelmed before he tries to understand anything. Then he can ask the surgeon to say it again more slowly, and ask for the next step in plain words. Ordinary experience confirms that a frightened body takes in very little, and that saying the fear aloud often loosens it a little. The limit is real. Naming the terror does not make the diagnosis smaller, does not promise the outcome, and does not replace the surgeon's advice or the people who can sit beside him.
