Meaning · English

Touching the sky, blazing, many-colored, with mouths open wide and enormous blazing eyes: seeing you, my inmost heart trembles with fear. I find no firmness and no peace, Vishnu.

Arjuna is still describing what he sees, and now he says what it does to him. The form touches the sky, glows in many colors, has open mouths and huge burning eyes. Two words carry his reaction. Dhriti is firmness, the inner grip that lets a person stand and act. Shama is calm, the quiet of a mind that is not being pulled apart. He says he finds neither. The phrase for his heart means the innermost self, so the shaking is not on the surface. This is Arjuna's account of his own state in that moment, not a rule the book lays down about the sight. He calls Krishna Vishnu here, naming him as the one who pervades everything, even while he is afraid. As for the commentators, Shankara reads the form as the Lord's own power over the whole world, which is why it overwhelms. Ramanuja reads Arjuna's fear as the awe of a devoted friend who has seen more than he can bear. Madhva stresses that the form belongs to Vishnu, the supreme one, which is why Arjuna addresses him by that name. The verse asks nothing of Arjuna yet. It records honestly that seeing something far larger than himself took away his footing.

Someone stands on a station platform as an express train thunders through without stopping. The noise, the wind and the blur of steel shake the ground under their feet, and for a few seconds they cannot think. Arjuna's trembling is that moment: the sight is so much larger than he is that his footing goes.

1. Next time something sudden frightens you, such as bad news or a looming deadline, stop for ten seconds and say to yourself plainly where it sits: chest, hands, stomach. 2. Say aloud or in writing, "I have lost my footing." Naming it is what Arjuna does here. 3. Breathe out slowly three times, feet flat on the floor. 4. Then choose one small next action and do only that.

A farmer stands at the edge of his field at dusk, watching the river rise toward the crop he planned to cut tomorrow. His hands shake. He cannot decide whether to call his brothers, move the pump or just stand there. The verse shows Arjuna doing something he does not do: he says exactly what is happening to him. His heart trembles, his grip is gone, his calm is gone. Said that plainly, fear becomes something the farmer can look at instead of something that has swallowed him. The next step is small. He picks one job, such as ringing his brother, and does it before thinking about the whole flood. Ordinary experience confirms that fear narrows the mind, and that one plain next action often comes more easily than a plan. The verse does not promise the water will stop, or that the fear will leave quickly. It does not replace help from neighbors, officials or a doctor if the shaking turns into something that will not settle. It only shows a man at the edge of his strength saying so truthfully.
