Company That Binds Krishna

Neither yoga nor the reckoning of philosophy holds me, says Krishna, nor right conduct, nor study of the scriptures, nor austerity, nor renunciation. Sacrifices, works of public good, gifts, vows, hymns, pilgrimages, restraints and observances do not hold me either. The company of the wise holds me as nothing else does, because it cuts away every attachment.
Krishna opens by naming almost every practice a devout person might rely on, and says none of them holds him the way one thing does. Three words carry it. Yoga comes from yuj, to yoke: disciplined union of the mind. Sankhya is the careful reckoning of what the world and the self are made of. Satsanga joins sat, the true or good, with sanga, keeping company, from a root meaning to cling. Sanga also means attachment, and the verse plays on this: company with the wise removes every other company, every other clinging. Clause by clause, Krishna lists the disciplines (yoga, sankhya, right conduct), the study and austerity, the sacrifices and gifts, the vows and pilgrimages, and the daily restraints and observances. Then he says that satsanga binds him. The commentators read this as the bond of love, not a prison. Krishna says this to Uddhava, who has asked how to be free. The answer is that the practices are good, yet what draws Krishna himself is the company of those who see truly, and what loosens the knots of attachment in a person is that same company. The verse asks Uddhava to give the companionship of the wise a place above the checklist of practices.
A pile of damp firewood will not catch by itself, however neatly stacked. Set beside a burning log, it dries and takes flame. The stacked wood is the vows and rites, good fuel. The burning log is a person already lit, whose nearness does what the stacking could not.
1. Think of one person you know whose steadiness and kindness you trust. This week, spend thirty unhurried minutes with them, in person or on a call, with your phone put away. 2. Ask them something real, such as how they get through a hard day, and listen without answering back. 3. Afterwards, sit quietly for two minutes and notice what in you has loosened or quieted. 4. Make a time to meet again.
A widower of seventy keeps his routine alone: early walk, fasting on the fixed days, his prayers said on time. All of it is correct, and by evening the flat is silent and he feels no lighter. On Sunday an old friend, calm and unhurried, comes and sits with him over tea and says little. Afterwards he notices his shoulders have dropped, and that he has spoken of his wife for the first time in weeks. Step by step, the verse reads this way: the routine was sound, yet it kept him with his own thoughts, and the friend's presence loosened what the routine had not reached. Krishna's teaching is that the company of the wise cuts attachments in a way solitary effort does not. Ordinary experience agrees that people take on the tone of those they sit with. The verse does not promise that grief ends, and it does not replace a doctor if low mood or poor sleep goes on for weeks.
