Through the company of the holy, beings of every sort have been lifted: demons and night-prowlers, beasts and birds, celestial musicians, heavenly dancers and serpents, perfected ones, bards and keepers of hidden wealth, and the sky-wandering vidyadharas. Among humans too, traders, labourers, women and those born lowest. All were of restless or dark nature, and so it has been in every age.
Krishna gives a long list, and the length is the point. Daityas and yatudhanas are demon races. Gandharvas, apsaras, siddhas, charanas, guhyakas and vidyadharas are celestial orders. Nagas are serpents, and there are plain beasts and birds. Then come human beings: vaishyas (traders), shudras (labourers), women, and the antyajas, those born outside the respected classes. The word that matters is satsanga, from sat, what truly is, and sanga, keeping company. It means being near people who live close to God. The last line names the condition of all these beings: rajas, restlessness and craving, and tamas, dullness and darkness. Krishna says they had these natures, and the company still reached them, in age after age. So the clause about every age matters as much as the list. The teaching is not a rare event but a pattern that keeps repeating. The commentators read the list as showing that no birth and no nature stands as a wall. Uddhava has just heard that rites, study and austerity do not hold Krishna as holy company does. The natural doubt is who is fit for it. Krishna's answer is that fitness was never the requirement. What it asks of the listener is to stop sorting people, and oneself, into those who can and those who cannot.
A fire is lit in a winter courtyard. The cook, the stray dog, a sparrow on the wall and a tired stranger all drift toward it, and the fire asks none of them what they are. The fire is holy company, and the warmth is what reaches whoever stands near it.
1. This week, pick one person you have quietly written off as unreachable, and sit with them for ten minutes without correcting anything. 2. Today, spend a few minutes near someone whose way of living you respect, such as an older relative or a neighbour who prays, and just listen. 3. Tonight, notice one belief you hold about being unfit for goodness, and write it on paper in one line.
A man walks out of prison after six years and stands at the back of a prayer hall one evening, sure that the people in front would move away if they knew. An elderly woman shifts her bag to make room and hands him a cup of tea. Nobody asks what he did. He sits down, and for the first time in weeks his shoulders drop. The teaching reads this way: Krishna says holy company has lifted every kind of being, so the man's past is not what decides whether he may sit there. The first step is only to be present. Then comes ordinary talk and shared routine, and the habits of the room begin to rub off. Ordinary experience confirms that people take on the tone of those they spend time with, for better or worse. The limit is plain. Sitting in good company does not undo what he did, repair the people he harmed, or replace the practical help he needs for work, housing and health. The text speaks of company lifting a person, and it makes no promise about outcomes beyond that.
