Meaning · English
Many have reached my own state: the son of Tvashta and the son of Kayadhu, and others besides. Vrishaparva, Bali, Bana, Maya, and then Vibhishana. Sugriva, Hanuman, the bear, the elephant, the vulture, the merchant. The hunter, the hunchbacked woman, the gopis of Vraja, the wives of the sacrificing priests, and still others.
Krishna is talking to his friend Uddhava in Dwaraka. Having said that the company of the wise holds him better than any austerity, he now points to people who got there. Two words carry the verse. Matpadam means 'my state', or literally 'my foot', the place where he stands. Praptah means 'reached', from a root for obtaining. So the line says: many have arrived where I am. Then comes the list, and it is deliberately mixed. There are kings and demon-chiefs: Bali, Bana, Vrishaparva, Maya. There is Vibhishana, and the monkey chiefs Sugriva and Hanuman. There are an animal and a bird, an elephant and a vulture, and a bear. There are ordinary people: a merchant, a hunter, a hunchbacked woman. Last come the cowherd women of Vraja and the wives of priests at a sacrifice, and then 'others'. Krishna names no single qualification they share. Some were fierce, some gentle, some learned, some not. The list answers an unspoken worry in Uddhava: whether this road is only for the fit and the trained. Krishna answers with names rather than argument. For the listener, the ask is quiet. It is to stop measuring oneself against a fixed ladder of worthiness, since the roll call does not use one.
A public tap at the end of a lane. The washerwoman, a schoolboy, a tired traveller and a stray dog all fill what they carry from the same flow, and nobody is asked for papers. The tap is Krishna, open to every kind of arrival, and the many vessels are the many different people on the list.
1. Tonight, write down three people you have quietly decided are too far from God, or too far from goodness. Use a scrap of paper and take two minutes. 2. Next to each name, write one thing in them that is plainly good. Keep it small and true. 3. Then read Krishna's list aloud once, slowly, with the hunter and the elephant in it, and notice whether your three names feel any different. 4. Tear the paper up afterwards.
A cook at the back of a crowded temple hall is watching others chant from books she never learned to read. She has scrubbed pots since dawn and feels she is only there by accident. Her mind starts a quiet count of everyone who seems more fit to be there. Krishna's list speaks to that count. He names a hunter, a hunchbacked woman, an elephant and a vulture beside kings and priests' wives, and none is asked for a credential. In that moment, the list would let her put down the comparing. She could sit where she is, hear the words she does follow, and let the pots, the hall and the singing all count as her place. Ordinary experience bears out one small thing here: people who feel they do not belong tend to hold back, and being plainly welcomed loosens that. The teaching does not promise that the feeling of being an outsider vanishes in one evening, and it does not claim every doubt is settled by a list of names. It says only that the door was not shut to people who looked less qualified than she does.
