They had not studied the scriptures in their hosts. They had not served great teachers. They had kept no vows and burned in no austerities. Yet through keeping my company they came to me. By love alone the cowherd women came, and the cows, and the trees, and the deer. Others too, dull of mind, and even the serpents, reached me with ease. I am not reached, however hard one tries, by yoga, by Sankhya reasoning, by charity, vows, austerity or sacrifice, by teaching, by private study, or by renunciation.

Three words carry this. Bhava is feeling or inner state, from bhu, to be. It means the heart's actual orientation, not a show of it. Satsanga, here as sanga, is company, from sanj, to cling to. Here it is staying close to Krishna. Yatna is effort, from yat, to strive. The first verse lists what these beings lacked: scriptural study, years serving great teachers, vows, austerity. Krishna says they came to him anyway, through keeping his company. The second names who they were: the cowherd women of Vraja, cows, trees, deer, serpents, and people of slow understanding. They reached him easily, by bhava alone. The third turns the point around. Yoga, Sankhya, charity, vows, austerity, sacrifice, teaching, study and renunciation do not bring a person to him, even when pursued with real effort. Krishna is not mocking these practices. He is saying none of them is the cause of reaching him. Why teach this now? Uddhava is learned, and Krishna has just spoken of company as the great force. A scholar could conclude that qualifications are what count. Krishna closes that door. Sridhara Svami reads the passage as showing that attachment to Krishna is the means, and that the other practices fall short without it. The Gaudiya teachers, Jiva Gosvami and Vishvanatha Chakravarti, take it as the high place of pure bhakti. It asks Uddhava to measure himself by where his love rests, not by what he has mastered.

A child who has never seen a map still finds the way to the kitchen, because the smell of bread draws her there. A traveler with the best maps and no pull toward the place may never arrive. Love is the pull. The practices are the maps.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and name one person or one holy name your heart goes toward without being asked. 2. Notice what that pull feels like in your body and in your attention. 3. Spend ten quiet minutes with that name or that person, with no goal of improving yourself. 4. Tomorrow, notice whether any practice you do has gone cold, and let love, not duty, be what you bring to it.

A woman sits in a hospital corridor at midnight while her father sleeps behind a door. She has no training in medicine, no words for comfort, nothing to offer but being there. She feels useless. This teaching speaks to her moment. Krishna says cowherd women, deer and trees reached him through nothing but loving company, so presence is not a lesser thing than skill. She can stop asking whether she is qualified and stay, hold his hand, listen to his breathing. Ordinary experience confirms part of this: people in distress usually remember who stayed with them, not what was said. Warmth and steady presence are widely understood to steady a frightened person, and a family doctor would say a sick person does better with someone near. The limit is plain. Love in the corridor does not cure the illness, and it does not replace the doctors working inside. The text itself speaks of reaching Krishna, not of changing outcomes, and what it says of that reaching is its own teaching, which this scene neither proves nor tests.
