Gopis' Nights Without Krishna

रामेण सार्धं मथुरां प्रणीते श्वाफल्किना मय्यनुरक्तचित्ताः। विगाढभावेन न मे वियोग तीव्राधयोऽन्यं ददृशुः सुखाय ॥ तास्ताः क्षपाः प्रेष्ठतमेन नीता मयैव वृन्दावनगोचरेण। क्षणार्धवत्ताः पुनरङ्ग तासां हीना मया कल्पसमा बभूवुः

When Balarama and I were taken to Mathura by the son of Shvaphalka, the gopis, whose minds were fixed on me, found nothing else that could bring them happiness. Their hearts were bound to me in deep love, and the pain of separation burned in them. Those nights, which they had spent with me, their dearest, in the pastures of Vrindavan, passed like half a moment. Now, parted from me, the same nights stretched out for them like an age.

Three words carry this. Anurakta means a mind coloured by love, from anu, along, and rañj, to dye. The gopis' minds are dyed in Krishna the way cloth takes a dye. Viyoga is separation, a joining torn apart. Adhi means mental pain, the ache that sits in the mind rather than the body. Kalpa is an age of the world, the longest span the tradition names. Krishna tells Uddhava what happened when Akrura, son of Shvaphalka, took him and Balarama away to Mathura. The gopis could not find happiness in anything else. Their love was deep, so the parting hurt sharply. The same nights that once went by like half a moment, because he was with them, now dragged like ages because he was gone. Time is measured by the heart, not the clock. It is taught here to show what bhakti looks like when it is whole: a mind with one place to rest. Sridhara Svami reads their pain as the mark of love so complete that nothing else could console them. The verse asks the listener to notice where their own mind is dyed, and what they reach for when the dearest thing is gone.

A child waiting at a window for a parent to come home watches the clock crawl, though an hour of play flies past. The same evening is long or short depending on who is missing. The gopis' nights were like that window: Krishna's absence made them long.

1. Tonight, notice one stretch of time that flew by and one that dragged. 2. Ask yourself what, or who, was on your mind in each. 3. Take five minutes before sleep to name the one thing your mind keeps returning to, without judging it. 4. Say a short thanks for it, or bring it gently to Krishna.

A mother sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning, her son in surgery. A clock on the wall shows ten minutes since she last looked. It feels like an hour. Earlier that day, a whole afternoon with him at the park had gone by unnoticed. Krishna's account of the gopis speaks to exactly this. Time is told by the heart. When what you love is near, hours pass lightly. When it is gone, minutes grow heavy. Ordinary experience confirms it: waiting, worry and longing all stretch the hours. The verse would change that corridor in small steps. She would see that the length of the night is the measure of her love, not a sign something is wrong with her. She would let the ache be what it is, instead of fighting it. And she would turn the mind, which has only one place to rest, toward what she trusts. It does not promise the surgery goes well, or that the waiting grows short. It does not replace the surgeon, or the support of the people around her. It speaks of how love and time are tied, as the text teaches it.

जब श्वफल्क के पुत्र मुझे और बलराम को मथुरा ले गए, तब मुझमें मन लगाए हुए गोपियों को कोई और ऐसी वस्तु न मिली जो उन्हें सुख दे सके। उनके हृदय मुझसे गहरे प्रेम में बँधे थे, और वियोग की पीड़ा उनके भीतर जल रही थी। वृंदावन के चरागाहों में अपने प्रियतम के साथ जो रातें उन्होंने बिताई थीं, वे आधे क्षण की तरह बीत गई थीं। अब मुझसे बिछड़कर वही रातें उनके लिए एक युग की तरह लंबी हो गईं।

इस श्लोक को तीन शब्द थामे हुए हैं। अनुरक्त का अर्थ है प्रेम से रंगा हुआ मन, जो अनु, यानी साथ-साथ, और रंज, यानी रंगना, से बना है। गोपियों के मन कृष्ण में वैसे ही रंगे हैं जैसे कपड़ा रंग को सोख लेता है। वियोग का अर्थ है बिछोह, यानी जुड़े हुए का टूटकर अलग हो जाना। आधि का अर्थ है मन की पीड़ा, वह कसक जो शरीर में नहीं, मन में बैठती है। कल्प संसार का एक युग है, वह सबसे लंबी अवधि जिसे परंपरा नाम देती है। कृष्ण उद्धव को बताते हैं कि जब श्वफल्क के पुत्र अक्रूर उन्हें और बलराम को मथुरा ले गए, तब क्या हुआ। गोपियों को किसी और चीज़ में सुख नहीं मिला। उनका प्रेम गहरा था, इसलिए बिछोह की चोट तीखी थी। जो रातें कभी आधे क्षण की तरह बीत जाती थीं, क्योंकि वे उनके साथ थे, वही अब युगों की तरह खिंचने लगीं, क्योंकि वे चले गए थे। समय को घड़ी से नहीं, हृदय से नापा जाता है। यहाँ यह इसलिए सिखाया गया है कि पूर्ण भक्ति कैसी दिखती है: ऐसा मन जिसके पास विश्राम के लिए एक ही ठिकाना हो। श्रीधर स्वामी उनकी पीड़ा को ऐसे प्रेम की निशानी मानते हैं जो इतना पूरा था कि कुछ और उन्हें सांत्वना नहीं दे सकता था। यह श्लोक सुनने वाले से कहता है कि वह देखे कि उसका अपना मन कहाँ रंगा है, और जब सबसे प्यारी चीज़ चली जाए तो वह किसकी ओर हाथ बढ़ाता है।

जो बच्चा खिड़की पर बैठा माता-पिता के घर लौटने की राह देखता है, उसे घड़ी रेंगती हुई लगती है, जबकि खेल का एक घंटा पल में निकल जाता है। वही शाम लंबी या छोटी इस पर निर्भर करती है कि कौन अनुपस्थित है। गोपियों की रातें उसी खिड़की जैसी थीं: कृष्ण की अनुपस्थिति ने उन्हें लंबा कर दिया।

(1) आज रात समय का एक ऐसा हिस्सा याद करो जो पल में बीत गया और एक ऐसा जो खिंचता चला गया। (2) अपने से पूछो कि दोनों समय तुम्हारे मन में क्या या कौन था। (3) सोने से पहले पाँच मिनट लेकर उस एक चीज़ का नाम लो जिसकी ओर तुम्हारा मन बार-बार लौटता है, बिना उसे अच्छा-बुरा ठहराए। (4) उसके लिए छोटा-सा धन्यवाद कहो, या उसे धीरे से कृष्ण को सौंप दो।

एक माँ रात के दो बजे अस्पताल के गलियारे में बैठी है, उसका बेटा ऑपरेशन में है। दीवार की घड़ी बताती है कि उसने पिछली बार देखा था तब से दस मिनट हुए हैं, पर उसे लगता है कि एक घंटा बीत गया। उसी दिन पहले, बेटे के साथ पार्क में बिताई पूरी दोपहर बिना पता चले निकल गई थी। गोपियों के बारे में कृष्ण का कथन ठीक इसी बात को कहता है। समय हृदय से बताया जाता है। जब प्रिय वस्तु पास होती है, घंटे हल्के बीतते हैं। जब वह दूर होती है, मिनट भारी हो जाते हैं। साधारण अनुभव भी यही कहता है: प्रतीक्षा, चिंता और तड़प, तीनों घंटों को खींच देती हैं। यह श्लोक उस गलियारे को छोटे-छोटे क़दमों में बदलेगा। वह देखेगी कि रात की लंबाई उसके प्रेम का माप है, इस बात का संकेत नहीं कि उसमें कुछ गड़बड़ है। वह कसक को जैसी है वैसी रहने देगी, उससे लड़ने के बजाय। और वह अपने मन को, जिसके पास विश्राम के लिए एक ही ठिकाना है, उस ओर मोड़ेगी जिस पर उसे भरोसा है। यह वचन नहीं देता कि ऑपरेशन सफल होगा, या कि प्रतीक्षा छोटी हो जाएगी। यह सर्जन की जगह नहीं लेता, न आसपास के लोगों के सहारे की। यह केवल इतना कहता है कि प्रेम और समय आपस में कैसे जुड़े हैं, जैसा ग्रंथ सिखाता है।
