Their minds were tied so closely to me that the gopis knew nothing of themselves, of this world, or of the next. They were like sages in deep absorption, who no longer know name and form, as rivers that have entered the sea. Longing for me, not knowing my true nature, they took me as their lover. Yet through that bond, hundreds and thousands of them reached me, the supreme Brahman.

Three words carry the verse. Anushanga is close attachment: anu means along with, sanj means to cling. It is the tie that makes a mind go wherever its beloved goes. Nama-rupa is name and form, the labels and shapes by which a person sorts out who is who and what is what. Brahman is the vast reality that holds everything. Krishna tells Uddhava that the gopis' minds were so fastened to him that they lost track of their own selves, of this world, and of whatever lies beyond it. He compares them to sages in deep absorption, who no longer register name and form. Then comes a plain admission: they did not know who he really was. They loved him as a lover, and they wanted him. Even so, thousands of them reached Brahman, which Krishna calls himself. Why say this to Uddhava here? Uddhava has been asking what binds a person and what frees one. Krishna answers with a surprise. The tie that frees is not learning or correct understanding. It is a bond with him so complete that nothing is left over to guard a separate self. The commentators note that the praise falls on the depth of the bond, not on the gopis' knowledge. The verse asks the listener to look at where the mind actually rests, and whether anything holds it that completely.

A sugar lump dropped into hot tea keeps its square shape for a moment. Then it is stirred, and the shape is gone, though the sweetness reaches every sip. A mind held completely by its beloved loses its own outline in the same way, and what remains is the beloved.

1. Pick a time today, ten minutes, in a quiet corner, with your phone in another room. 2. Bring Krishna to mind with affection, as you would think of someone you love and miss. Picture him, or repeat his name slowly. 3. When the mind wanders to errands or worries, return to him without scolding yourself. 4. Afterwards, notice one thing: for how long you forgot yourself, your plans, or the clock.

A boy of fourteen sits with his tabla at dusk, working one stubborn rhythm. His mother calls him to eat twice. When he finally looks up, the lamps are lit and he cannot say how long he has been playing. The verse speaks to exactly that moment. Ordinary experience confirms that when attention rests wholly on something loved, hunger, time and self-regard fall away. The boy was not thinking about his marks, his sore fingers or what the others would say. For those minutes he was not guarding anything. Krishna's teaching reaches further. It says the gopis' bond with him dissolved their sense of a separate self, and that this led to Brahman. The text says this of Krishna, and the tabla is only a small taste of absorption. The verse does not promise that every deep absorption leads to liberation, or that missing meals and sleep is wise. It does not remove grief or replace a doctor. A person whose mind will not settle on anything for long may need real help, and the verse offers no cure for that.
