Therefore, Uddhava, give up what is commanded and what is forbidden, what is to be done and what is to be turned from, what is yet to be heard and what has already been heard. Come to me alone as your refuge, to me who am the Self of every embodied being. Come with your whole being, and through me fear can reach you from nowhere.
Krishna names four pairs of rules and asks Uddhava to let go of them. Codana is an injunction, from cud, to urge: what scripture tells you to do. Praticodana is its mirror, the prohibition. Pravritti is turning toward action, and nivritti is turning back from it. Then come what is still to be heard and what has already been heard, the whole library of teaching. After setting all of this down, Krishna gives one thing to hold: sharana, refuge, a place to run to for shelter. He is that refuge because he is the Self of all embodied beings, so Uddhava is not asked to cling to a stranger. Sarvatmabhava, with one's whole being, means no part of the heart is held back. The reason Krishna gives is fearlessness: through him, fear has no side to come from. The commentators agree that this does not call duty worthless. It puts surrender above the long lists, because the lists are only a means and the refuge is the goal. Uddhava, who has begged to follow Krishna, is being told where to go instead. Krishna asks him to stop sorting his life into permitted and forbidden and to turn toward him with all that he is.
A small child crossing a busy road does not recite the traffic rules. She holds her father's hand and walks. The rules still exist, but her safety rests on the hand. The rules stand for the lists of do and do not. The hand stands for the refuge Krishna offers.
1. Tonight, take five minutes and write down the rules you carry for being a good person, as many as come to mind. 2. Read the list slowly and mark the ones you follow out of fear of failing rather than out of love. 3. Sit quietly for a few minutes with the list set aside and turn your attention to Krishna alone. Say his name, or simply hold his image in mind. 4. Notice whether your shoulders and breathing change when the list is put down.
A mother sits on the bathroom floor at three in the morning with a feverish child asleep against her. She has read four lists of advice and they disagree: sponge him, don't, wake him, let him sleep. Her fear grows with each list. The verse would change that moment in steps. She would stop sorting the lists and turn her whole attention to the child in her arms. She would hold her fear before the refuge Krishna names, the Self of all beings, instead of before the next instruction. Then she would do the plain next thing: check his breathing, give water, and call the doctor if the fever or his behaviour worries her. Ordinary experience confirms that too many rules crowd out attention to the person in front of us. The limit is clear. The verse does not lower a fever, does not remove the danger of illness, and does not replace medical care where it is needed. It speaks to the fear underneath the instructions, and it promises what Krishna says it promises, no more.
