Doubt Rising as Sound

Master of the masters of yoga, I hear your words, yet a doubt stays in me, lodged in the self, and by it my mind keeps wandering. This is the living being, born from the hollow of the body: with the life-breath, as sound, it enters the cave of the heart. Taking a subtle form made of mind, it becomes the measure, the tone, the letter, and so grows gross.

Three Sanskrit words carry this. Samshaya is doubt, from sam and shi, to lie down together: two views lying in one bed, neither getting up. Prana is the life-breath, from pra and an, to breathe forth. Ghosha is sound, a call or hum. In the first verse Uddhava speaks to Krishna, whom he calls master of the masters of yoga. He says he has heard everything, and a doubt still sits in him and keeps his mind turning. In the second, Krishna describes the living being, the jiva. It comes out of a hollow place in the body, enters the cave of the heart with the breath, as sound, and takes a fine form made of mind. From there it thickens into measure, tone and letter, until it is speech we can hear. The commentators read the sound as a stage of speech rising from the heart, from subtle to spoken. It is taught here because Uddhava's doubt is about how the unseen self relates to words, and Krishna answers by tracing speech back to where it begins. It asks the listener to notice that a spoken word starts quietly, inside, before it is a sound.

A bell struck once. First there is only a tremor in the metal that no one sees, then a hum, then a clear note that fills the room. The tremor is the subtle form in the heart, and the note heard by everyone is the same sound grown gross.

1. Tonight, sit quietly for two minutes before you say anything to anyone at home. 2. Before your first spoken sentence, notice the thought or breath that comes ahead of it. 3. Say one sentence slowly, and watch it travel from inside you to the air. 4. If a doubt is still with you, name it in a single plain sentence, aloud or on paper.

A man is at his mother's bedside the night before her surgery. He has been told the risks twice and agrees with all of it, yet one doubt keeps circling, and when he tries to speak it comes out tangled. The verse offers him a small order of things. Uddhava admits that hearing the teacher has not ended his doubt, and says so. Krishna then traces speech to its source: a word begins as a quiet movement with the breath, takes a mental form, and only then becomes tone and letter. So the man can stop before talking, feel his breath settle, find the one sentence under the tangle, and say that. Ordinary experience agrees that a thought is easier to say clearly once it has been named inwardly first. The verse does not promise that the doubt will leave, that the surgery will go well, or that speech replaces the surgeon's advice. It offers a way to say a true thing plainly.
