Fire lies hidden in wood, kin to the wind, only warmth. Churned hard with the drill, it is born as a small spark, and fed with ghee it grows. In just this way, speech is how I become evident. So too are talking, work of the hands, walking, letting go, smell, taste, sight, touch and hearing, then intention, discernment and the sense of I, and the thread running through them, with all the changes of rajas, sattva and tamas.

Three words carry the teaching. Vyakti means a showing forth, a making plain of what was already there. Abhimana is the ego-sense, from man, to think: the thought 'this is I, this is mine'. Sutra is thread, the one cord on which the beads of a person are strung. Krishna begins with the fire-drill. Fire sits unseen in dry wood as mere warmth. Two sticks are churned, a spark is born, and ghee makes it blaze. Nothing new is added to the wood. The fire only comes into view. Krishna says speech is his coming into view in just this way. Then he lists the rest: talking, the work of the hands, walking, giving out, and the five senses of smell, taste, sight, touch and hearing. Next come intention, discernment and the ego-sense. Last comes the thread that holds them together, and the shifting of rajas (restlessness), sattva (clarity) and tamas (dullness) that colours them all. The commentators read this as the whole working person, from the mouth to the inner mind. The reason for the teaching is Uddhava's doubt about how the self lives among sound and speech. Krishna answers that one source shows itself through all these doors. So each faculty is a place where he can be seen, and none of them is a stranger to him.

A house has one water pipe from the street. Inside, it runs to the kitchen tap, the bathroom, the garden hose. Each tap looks separate and each has its own sound. All of them give the same water from the same line. Speech, sight and the other faculties are the taps, and Krishna is the line.

1. Choose one ordinary conversation today, with a family member or a shopkeeper. 2. Before you answer, take one breath and notice that speech is about to rise, like a spark from the wood. 3. Speak slowly, and listen to your own voice as if it were the first time. 4. That evening, spend two minutes recalling which words came out clear and which came out rushed or dull.

A bus driver, stuck behind a stalled cart, feels his jaw tighten and hears himself snap at a passenger. He did not plan the words. Today's understanding of the body would say that breath, voice box, hearing and mood all work together beneath choice, and a tired or hungry body speaks sharply. Ordinary experience confirms this much: tiredness weakens restraint. The verse would change that moment step by step. First, the snap is seen as one of many ways the person shows itself, not as the whole of him. Second, the list of senses, intention, discernment and ego-sense gives names to what was happening: he heard the horn, he formed an intention, and the sense of 'my time is being stolen' rose. Third, a pause before speaking becomes possible, because the speech is known to be a spark and not yet the fire. The limit is plain. The teaching does not stop the traffic, undo the sharp word already said, or replace rest, food or a doctor's care when the irritability comes from illness.
