The Friend You Rest Upon

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 36.32

Meaning · English

The one in whom you can place your trust as completely as you place it in a father is the true friend.

Vidura gives a test for friendship, and the test is trust. Two words carry it. Mitra is the friend. Vishvasa is trust, and its root sense is breathing freely: the ease of someone who does not have to hold his breath around another person. Pita is the father, the person a child leans on without first checking whether he will hold. Vidura says the friend is the one you can lean on that way. Nothing is said about charm, rank, gifts or shared amusements. The only measure is whether you can lower your guard. The clause just before this one says a person you must wait on in fear is no friend, so trust and fear are opposites here. The speaker's reason is the king in front of him. Dhritarashtra lies awake, surrounded by people who tell him what pleases him. Vidura is pointing to the difference between a voice that soothes and a voice you can rest on. For anyone weighing an act, who will do it and why, this gives a first question: who can I tell all of it to, and who would tell me the truth back?

A stair rail in a dark house, worn smooth by years of hands. You grip it without looking and put your full weight on it, because it has never moved. A true friend is that rail: you don't test it, you simply lean, and it holds.

1. Before you start something that matters this week, write down the act, who will do it, and what it is for, in three short lines. 2. Think of one person you would show those lines to without editing them. Notice how quickly the name comes. 3. Tell that person today, in a few minutes, and listen to the reply. 4. Notice who you hesitate to tell, and what you fear they will say.
