Proof Comes With Need

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 36.39

Meaning · English

Whether a friend is true or hollow cannot be told until he is asked to do something for you. A person's loyalty stays out of sight until a real need puts a task in front of him.

Two ideas carry this. Mitra is the friend, the one who stands close to you. Kārya is a task, literally a thing to be done, from the root kṛ, to do. The word used for being asked is a request that has weight. It is a job that costs the other person something, not a passing favour. The text also names two outcomes, sincere or otherwise, and says both stay unknown until that moment. Vidura's claim is simple. Warmth, kind words and company in easy times show nothing about the friend. Only a task given and met, or dodged, shows what he is. The clause about 'otherwise' matters as much as the first, since a doubtful friend may turn out sound, and a trusted one may not. Vidura says this to a king who cannot sleep, with a war coming and many people around him. He wants Dhritarashtra to see that those who surround him are not yet tested, so he should not assume who will stand by him. The reason he gives is that sincerity cannot be seen from outside. It can only be learned by asking.

A rope hangs from a hook and looks sound. Its colour is even and its fibres look tight. Nobody knows until a heavy bucket is tied to it and lifted from the well. Friendship is the rope, and the task asked of a friend is the bucket.

1. Before starting something that matters this week, write down the act, who will do it, and what it is for. 2. Beside it, name one person you expect to lean on. Ask whether you have ever seen them tested, or only assumed. 3. Make one small, honest request of that person, such as ten minutes of help. 4. Notice how they answer, and notice how you would answer if they asked the same of you.
