When Rama had finished speaking with his two brothers, he turned to Lakshmana. "Lakshmana," he said, "bring Vasishtha here, the best of the twice-born, who knows every rite of the Aswamedha. Bring Vamadeva too, and Jabali, and Kashyapa. I will consult them properly, and then I will set free a horse that carries all the right marks." Lakshmana went at once, invited all those Brahmanas, and brought them before his brother. Rama bent and touched their feet. The Brahmanas looked at Raghava, who stood among them like a god no one could hold back, and they welcomed him with blessings. Then Rama folded his hands and asked them about the horse sacrifice. They first bowed to the god Rudra, and then they began to speak in praise of the rite.
They told Rama of many virtues of the Aswamedha that he had never heard before, and he was filled with joy. Doing as they wished, he said to Lakshmana, "Send a messenger quickly to the great-hearted Sugriva. Tell him, 'Come and share in the festivities, with all the mighty monkeys and bears who follow you. May all go well with you.' Make sure Bibhishana, king of the Rakshasas, comes as well, with his followers around him. Let the great kings who wish me well come with their people, and invite with care the good kings of other lands who are my friends. Invite the Rishis whose only wealth is their austerity, and the pious Brahmanas of every province. Invite the actors and the singers too."
"Have a wide sacrificial ground made on the banks of the river Gomoti, in the Naimisha forest," Rama went on. "That country is holy and best suited for it. Let rites for peace be held everywhere. Invite hundreds of our people, so they can see the ceremony and go home honoured and happy. Let Bharata go ahead with a million beasts carrying rice, sesame, beans, chickpeas, pulses, salt, oil, ghee, and a hundred koti of silver and gold coins. Let soldiers march before him, and let merchants, dancers, cooks and actors follow. With Bharata let there go the children and the old, the Brahmanas and citizens, the servants and treasurers, the mothers and the wives, and the golden image of my wife, which is to be consecrated at the sacrifice."
Bharata and Shatrughna did as Rama asked, preparing fine lodgings, food, drink and clothes. Rama sent everything ahead, then set free a black horse bearing all the right marks, and put Lakshmana and the priests in charge of it. He rode with his soldiers to the Naimisha forest, and when he saw the sacrificial ground he was delighted. "It has become truly lovely," he said. All the kings sent him gifts, and Rama gave gifts in return, and saw that each arriving king had food, drink and clothes. He set aside fine houses to lodge them. Bharata and Shatrughna looked after the kings. Sugriva and his monkeys, quiet and disciplined, waited on the Brahmanas. Bibhishana and his Rakshasas, with steady minds, served the Rishis.
So the horse sacrifice began, and Lakshmana watched over the horse. People were given gifts until they wanted nothing more, and the only sound to be heard was "Give, give." Sweets and everything else were handed out freely. Before a beggar could even open his mouth, a monkey or a Rakshasa had already filled his hands. Whoever wanted gold received gold; whoever wanted land or goods received them; whoever longed for jewels was given jewels. The Rakshasas and Vanaras were everywhere, giving riches and clothes even to those who had not asked. The ascetics, who had lived for ages, said, "We have never seen a sacrifice like this, not Indra's, nor Soma's, nor Yama's, nor Varuna's." The sacrifice went on for a whole year, and still Rama's treasury was not emptied. It had grown.
