Greater is the hardship of those whose minds cling to the unmanifest. That path is reached with exceeding difficulty by those who wear a body.
Three words carry it. Avyakta means unmanifest: a- is "not" and vyakta is "made plain", so it is what offers no visible form to hold. Klesha means hardship, the wearing strain of effort. Dehavat means "having a body", the embodied. Krishna tells Arjuna that the strain is greater for those whose minds are fixed on the unmanifest, because embodied people reach that path only with exceeding difficulty. The reason sits in the word embodied. A person who sees through eyes, thinks in words and loves through touch has a mind built to grip what has shape. Asking that mind to rest on what has none is possible, but each step goes against its grain. Krishna has just described those who worship the imperishable, and he does not call them wrong. He says they reach him. He says only that the road is steeper. Shankara reads the difficulty as the pull of identifying with the body, which the seeker of the unmanifest must first unlearn. Ramanuja reads it as the reason devotion to a personal Lord suits embodied beings better. Madhva stresses that the Lord is reached by his grace, so bare effort at the formless falls short. What Krishna asks of the listener is an honest knowledge of his own make before he picks a road.
Picture a smooth, tall wall with no ledges and no ropes, and next to it a staircase with a rail. Both rise to the same roof. The wall is the path of the unmanifest, and a body has few handholds on it. The staircase is a path with form, which a body can grip.
1. Tonight, sit for three minutes and try to hold the idea of all of space, with no picture in it. Notice how soon your mind slips away. 2. Rest for a minute, then spend three minutes watching one lit lamp or candle flame, or listening to one steady sound. 3. Notice which was easier to stay with, and write down one line about the difference.
A young mother sits awake at three in the morning beside a feverish child. She tells herself that everything is one and all will be well, and the words slide off her. Her mind keeps racing to the thermometer. Then she begins to hum the lullaby her own mother sang and holds the small hot hand. Her breathing slows. The verse speaks to this moment. A mind in a body, tired and frightened, steadies more easily on something it can touch or hear than on something with no shape at all. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness makes the abstract harder to hold. Krishna does not say the vast thought is false, only that the road through form is gentler for those who live in bodies. So she uses the humming and the hand, and the vast thought can wait for a rested hour. The verse does not promise the fever will fall or the fear will go. If the child's fever is high or lasts, a doctor is needed, and no steadiness of mind takes the place of one.
