Lifted Across the Ocean

Bhagavad Gita 12.7

Meaning · English

For those whose consciousness is united with me, Arjun, son of Pritha, I become the deliverer from the ocean of birth and death, and I do so before long.

Three words carry the verse. Samuddharta is one who lifts out: the root means to raise up, and the prefix makes it complete, so Krishna is not guiding from the shore but reaching in and raising the person. Samsara is the round of birth and death, a wandering that goes on and on, and sagara is the ocean that picture is drawn as. Aveshita means entered into or absorbed. Chetas is consciousness, the mind's attention. So the people described are those whose attention has entered Krishna and stays there. Plainly, Krishna tells Arjuna that for such people he himself becomes the one who lifts them out of the round of birth and death, and not after a long time. The reason sits in the verses just before. The path to the unmanifest is very hard for those who have a body, so Krishna offers this nearer path and promises he will do the lifting. It asks Arjuna for one thing: that his attention rest in Krishna. Shankara reads Krishna here as the Lord who gives the devotee the knowledge that frees. Ramanuja reads devotion as the means and Krishna's own act of raising as the result. Madhva stresses that deliverance comes through the Lord's grace.

A hiker on a steep, slippery trail clips her harness to a fixed rope. She still climbs with her own legs, but when her foot slips, the rope holds. Attention joined to Krishna is the clip. Krishna is the rope that takes the weight and brings the climber up soon.

1. Choose one name or one picture of Krishna that feels natural to you. 2. Three times today, on waking, before a meal and before sleep, stop for one minute and hold only that name or picture in mind. 3. When your mind wanders, which it will, bring it back without scolding yourself. 4. At night, note how many times it wandered and how it felt to come back.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning while his mother is in surgery. His mind runs ahead to the worst outcomes, one after another, and his chest is tight. He remembers the name he has said since childhood and says it quietly. The verse changes the moment in steps. First, his attention has somewhere to go besides the next fear. Second, each time it slips back to the fears, he returns it, and the returning is the practice itself. Third, he is no longer only a man holding up a heavy night alone, because Krishna tells Arjuna that for those whose consciousness is united with him, he becomes the one who lifts them out. Ordinary experience confirms that a steady, familiar phrase can slow the breath and loosen the grip of panic. The verse does not promise that the surgery will go well, that grief will be spared, or that prayer replaces the surgeon. It speaks of deliverance from the round of birth and death, and it leaves the doctors to do their work.
