Mind and Intellect Given Over

Bhagavad Gita 12.8

Meaning · English

Fix your mind on me alone. Surrender your intellect to me. Then you shall live in me alone from that time on, and of this there is no doubt.

Krishna names two faculties. Manas is the mind that feels, wants and wanders. Buddhi is the intellect that weighs, decides and judges. He asks Arjuna to put the first on him, and the verb means to set something down and leave it there. He asks the second to be surrendered, which means handing over the deciding itself. The word for living, nivas, means making a home, not visiting. So the promise is that the one who gives both faculties will dwell in Krishna, and the words after that add a time: from then on, with no doubt. The reason comes from the verses before. Krishna has just described devotees whose whole attention rests on him and whom he lifts out of death and rebirth. Here he gives the direct instruction for it. It also answers Arjuna's problem, a mind pulled two ways and an intellect that cannot decide. Krishna offers one place for both to rest, and doubt ends there. Shankara reads the dwelling in Krishna as knowing oneself one with the Lord. Ramanuja reads it as living near the Lord in loving meditation. Madhva reads it as dwelling in the Lord's presence, kept by devotion. All three take the verse as a promise, and the next verse admits it is hard.

A compass needle shakes when you first lift the compass, swinging left and right. Then it settles and points one way, and stays. The shaking needle is the mind and intellect with many pulls on them. The settled needle is what they become when they are fixed on one thing.

1. Pick one time today, such as the first minute after you wake or the walk to the bus, and name one thing you hold most dear or one name of God. 2. Each time your mind drifts to a worry, bring it back to that one thing, gently, without scolding yourself. 3. Before one small decision today, such as what to cook or whether to reply, pause for three breaths and ask what that dear thing would want. Then decide and let it go. 4. In the evening, notice how many times you came back.

A man stands on a railway platform with two tickets in his hand. One goes home to his ailing father, the other to an interview that may not come again. For an hour his mind has gone back and forth, and he is tired out, not by either choice but by the arguing. Krishna's teaching would change that moment in steps. First, the man would name the one thing he holds above both tickets. Second, he would let his mind rest there instead of running between the two futures. Third, he would let his judgment serve that single aim and not keep reopening the question. Ordinary experience agrees that a divided mind wears a person down faster than a hard choice does. The verse does not promise that the choice will be painless, that the father will recover, or that the interview will come again. It speaks of where the mind lives, and a doctor is still needed for the father's illness.
