When Steadiness Won't Come

Bhagavad Gita 12.9

If you cannot hold your mind steadily on me, then, Arjun, conqueror of wealth, seek to reach me by the yoga of repeated practice, by wanting it again and again.

Krishna has just asked Arjuna to fix his mind on him alone. Now he admits that this may not happen at once. Three words carry the verse. Chitta is the mind, the restless stuff of thoughts and moods. Sthiram means steady, standing still the way a lamp does in a room without wind. Abhyasa means practice, a doing that is repeated until it grows familiar, and yoga here means joining the mind to God. Krishna's plain sense: if the mind will not settle on him, Arjuna should not give up, but should return to him again and again. The reason is that steadiness is not a gift some people are born with. Krishna treats a wandering mind as the ordinary starting point, and practice as the road out of it. The verse also names the wish to attain him, ichchha, as part of the work. Wanting is what brings the mind back each time it slips. Krishna asks Arjuna for effort and return, not instant success. Shankara reads the practice as repeated effort to hold the mind on one object. Ramanuja reads it as steady, loving remembrance of God. Madhva stresses that the wish to reach God must stay alive through the practice.

A child learning to ride a bicycle wobbles, puts a foot down, and starts again, over many afternoons. No single try makes the balance. The repeated starting does. The wobbling mind is the child, the bicycle is the chosen focus, and each return after a fall is the practice Krishna names.

1. Pick one short moment today, such as the first five minutes after waking, and sit quietly. 2. Bring to mind one name or image of God that you love, and rest your attention on it. 3. When your mind wanders, which it will, notice that it has, and bring it back gently. Count each return as a success. 4. Do the same time tomorrow, and for a week. Notice whether the returns come a little sooner.

A mother sits in a hospital corridor at night while her son is in surgery. She wants to pray, even to think of one calm thing, but her mind runs through worst cases, then to the unpaid bill, then back again. She decides she is failing at it. Krishna's words change the moment step by step. First, the wandering is expected, not a fault of hers. Second, she needs no perfect stillness, only to turn back toward what she holds dear, and then turn back again after the next drift. Third, the wish to return is itself the practice, so each small return counts. Ordinary experience agrees that attention wanders under strain and grows steadier with repeated, gentle training, as a muscle does with use. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that her fear will vanish, that the surgery will go well, or that a quiet mind replaces the surgeon. If worry becomes constant or crushing over weeks, a doctor or counsellor is the right person to speak to as well.
