Work as the Offering

Bhagavad Gita 12.10

Meaning · English

If you cannot even manage steady practice, then let your work be done for me. Simply by doing your actions for my sake, you will reach perfection.

Three words carry it. Abhyasa is practice, the patient return to one thing again and again. Karma is action, whatever you do with hands, voice and mind. Siddhi is perfection, a thing brought to its completion. Krishna has just offered Arjuna a ladder. Fix the mind on me; if that fails, practise returning to me. Now he comes to the next rung down. If even steady practice is beyond you, he says, make me the purpose of your work. Do what is yours to do, and do it for my sake. The reason is plain. Arjuna is a man of action, standing in a chariot with a battle ahead, and Krishna does not ask him to become someone else first. He lets the life Arjuna already has become the road. Work is not set aside as a distraction; it is turned toward Krishna. The verse asks only for a change of aim, and it promises that this alone brings siddhi. Shankara and Ramanuja both read this as a gentler discipline for those who cannot sit in sustained meditation, with Ramanuja stressing devotion in the work itself. Madhva stresses that the work is service to the Lord, who is the one worth serving.

A cook in a busy kitchen chops onions all day. On an ordinary Tuesday she chops them for her mother's birthday meal, and the same knife and the same board carry a different meaning. The work did not change; the person it is for did.

1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes, answering a message or sweeping a floor. 2. Before you begin, say quietly, 'This is for you,' naming God, or whatever you hold highest. 3. Do it at your usual pace and as well as you can, for as long as it takes. 4. Afterwards, notice whether your hurry, irritation or wish for praise felt any different.

A man drives home after a long shift at a loading dock. He has tried to sit quietly each evening and cannot; his mind runs through bills and tomorrow's schedule. He feels he has failed at anything spiritual. Krishna's words would change that moment in steps. First, the failure to sit is not treated as the end; it is a signal to try a different door. Second, the next load he lifts, the call he returns, the meal he cooks can all be given a direction, and the direction is named. Third, the day stops being split into a holy part and an empty part. Ordinary experience agrees that a task done for someone we love is carried more lightly than the same task done for no one. The verse does not promise that tiredness, debt or worry will lift, and it does not replace rest, medical care or practical help when they are needed. It offers a way to use the hours that are already there.
