Each Effort, Its Fruit
Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 36.48
Meaning · English
Fear falls away through knowing the self. Through austerity a person wins what is great and worth having. Through waiting on those who are older and wiser, learning comes. Through holding the senses in check, peace is gained.
Vidura sets four efforts beside four results, and each pair is exact. Three words carry most of it. Tapas comes from a root meaning heat: a deliberate hardship taken on to burn off slackness. Shushrusha, here waiting on elders, comes from a root meaning to hear: it is attentive service, done in order to listen. Dama comes from a root meaning to tame, as one tames a horse: it is restraint of the senses and appetites. Now the clauses. Knowing the self removes fear. Austerity wins something large and valuable. Attending on teachers brings learning. Self-restraint brings peace. None of them is offered as a short cut. Each result is tied to the one effort that produces it. The reason is in front of him. Dhritarashtra lies awake, afraid, asking for words that will quiet him. Vidura does not soothe him. He tells him what each thing actually costs and what it actually returns. A man who wants peace but will not restrain himself, or wants learning but will not sit and listen, is asking the wrong act for the wrong fruit. Before beginning, Vidura implies, ask what you are doing, who is doing it, and what it can really give.
A farmer does not sow barley and wait for mangoes. He knows what each seed gives, and he plants the one that matches the harvest he wants. Vidura treats effort the same way: fear, learning, greatness and peace each grow from their own seed, and no other.
1. Tonight, name one thing you want: calm, a skill, or an end to a worry. Write it on a scrap of paper. 2. Beside it, write the one effort the verse pairs with it. Calm goes with restraint, learning with attentive listening to someone who knows more, and fear with looking honestly at who you are. 3. Ask whether the effort you have been making is that one. Take five minutes to see. 4. Do one small piece of the matching effort today. For example, hold back one habit for an hour, or ask an older person a question and listen without interrupting.
