Swallowing Anger Whole

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 36.65

Meaning · English

King, anger is a drink that is bitter, sharp, harsh and burning, and it leaves pain behind. It is a headache that no illness caused. People without wisdom cannot swallow it and keep it down.

Vidura uses a drink to describe anger, and each word of the description is a taste. Katuka means bitter or pungent. Tikshna means sharp. Ushna means hot. Together they say anger is unpleasant going in and burns on the way down. The text then adds that its result is painful: the harm comes afterward, not only in the moment. Vidura also calls anger a headache, shiroroga, that has no bodily cause. It hurts like sickness, yet no illness produced it. Last, he says the unwise cannot digest it. To digest something is to take it in and let it pass without damage. Those without wisdom cannot do this, so the anger lodges in them and works on them. Nilakantha's reading, as it is usually given, takes the unwise as people who act on anger instead of letting it settle. Vidura is speaking to a king who cannot sleep and who is nursing grievances before a war. The verses around this one are about health, and this verse fits that thread: anger is a sickness a person gives himself. Vidura's reason is that this pain has no outside cause, so the one who carries it is the only one who can set it down.

Picture a mouthful of scalding, bitter tea that you cannot bring yourself to spit out. You hold it in your mouth, it burns the tongue, and your whole head tightens around it. Anger is that mouthful: kept inside, it hurts the holder before it touches anyone else.

1. Today, the next time you feel anger rising, stop for the length of three slow breaths before you speak or act. 2. Notice where it sits in your body: jaw, forehead, chest, stomach. Just name the place to yourself. 3. Before the day ends, sit for two minutes and ask of one angry moment: what was the act, who did it, and what did I want from answering? 4. Write one line on paper about it, then put the paper away.
