And from that same contrast it is established that this purusha is a witness. It stands apart and alone, it is neutral, it is a seer, and it is not a doer.

Once we grant that consciousness exists, what is it like? Samkhya answers by contrast. The school has already described prakriti, nature, as made of three gunas. These are strands of brightness, motion and inertia, and they are always busy, unconscious and shared. Purusha, the conscious self, is the opposite of all that, and five features follow. It is a witness: it watches what happens. It has kaivalya, aloneness, meaning it is set apart from the three gunas. It is neutral and takes no side. It is a seer. And it is not a doer. Gaudapada spells out the logic. The gunas alone are the doers and set things in motion, while the witness neither engages nor withdraws. He compares purusha to a wandering monk passing through a village where everyone is busy ploughing: present, but not involved. Because it stands in the middle, it sees, and it does not act. That leaves a real puzzle, which Gaudapada raises at once. If the self is not a doer, how does it resolve, 'I will do right, not wrong'? It seems both doer and non-doer.

Picture a spectator in the stands at a football match, supporting neither team. Every pass, tackle and goal happens on the pitch, through the players. The spectator sees all of it and kicks no ball. In Samkhya's picture the pitch and players are nature and its busy strands, and the spectator is consciousness: fully present, completely uninvolved.

This sits squarely inside today's debate between dualism and physicalism. Neuroscience has learned a great deal about how the brain plans, decides and acts, and much of it runs without our awareness. On that point Samkhya's split looks surprisingly apt: the deciding machinery belongs on the side of nature, not of consciousness. What neuroscience has not explained is why any of this is felt at all. That is the hard problem of consciousness, and Samkhya's witness is one answer to it. Most physicalists reject a separate seer that does nothing. They see awareness as part of the brain's own working. A consciousness that causes nothing also looks a little like modern epiphenomenalism, though Samkhya does not treat it as a byproduct of matter. Psychology does use a watching, non-reacting stance in mindfulness-based therapies. Whether pure awareness without any content really exists is still an open question.
