So, from contact with it, the unconscious evolved nature seems as if conscious; and though the doing belongs to the gunas, the one who sits apart likewise seems as if a doer.
Verse 19 left a puzzle. Samkhya holds that purusha, pure consciousness, only watches, and that prakriti, nature, has no awareness of its own. Why, then, does a living person seem to be one aware being who thinks and acts? Samkhya's answer is that each borrows the look of the other because they are joined. The linga, the 'mark', means the intellect (buddhi), ego and the other evolutes that nature unfolds, including the senses. It is unconscious, yet next to consciousness it looks aware. The gunas, the three strands that make up nature, do all the doing. Yet purusha, which is udasina, 'sitting apart', looks like the doer. Gaudapada reads it plainly: deciding is the work of the gunas, not of purusha. A pot touching something cold turns cold, and one touching something hot turns hot. A man seized along with thieves is taken for a thief. The confusion comes only from nearness. That is why, for Samkhya, telling the two apart is what brings freedom.
On a clear night the full moon can be bright enough to cast shadows on a path. It looks like a lamp hung in the sky. Yet the moon makes no light. All of that glow is sunlight, and the sun itself is out of sight. In Samkhya's picture the mind is the moon. Its seeming awareness is borrowed from a consciousness that stays unseen and only shines.
Samkhya's split is unusual. It puts thinking, deciding and acting on the side of matter, and keeps only bare awareness apart. Modern cognitive science agrees with the first half more than one might expect: memory, choice and the sense of 'I' are studied as work the brain does. Psychology also finds that the feeling of being the author of an action is built by the mind and can misfire, so seeming to act and acting can come apart. The two views part ways over the witness. Mainstream neuroscience posits no separate awareness standing beside the brain. Any dualism also faces the old question of how two utterly different things could be joined. Yet why brain activity is felt at all, the hard problem of consciousness, is still open. That is the gap Samkhya fills with purusha.
