The Lame and the Blind

Meaning · English
For consciousness, the union is so that it may see; for primal nature, so that freedom can follow. The two join like a lame man and a blind man, and from that joining comes creation.
The question is why consciousness and nature meet at all. Samkhya calls consciousness purusha: it sees but does nothing. It calls nature prakriti, also called pradhana or 'the primal source': it does everything but sees nothing. Each lacks what the other has. Samkhya holds they come together for two purposes. First, purusha gets to see nature, all of it, from the first stirrings of mind down to the physical elements. Second, that seeing leads to kaivalya, 'standing alone': purusha's freedom from entanglement. Gaudapada's commentary fills out the simile. A caravan is scattered by robbers in a forest. A lame man and a blind man are left behind. They meet, trust each other's word, and the blind man carries the lame one. The lame man points the way and the blind man walks. When they reach where they were going, they part. In the same way, once nature has shown itself and purusha is free, nature withdraws. The whole unfolding of the world is the product of this partnership; Gaudapada compares it to a child born of a couple. And it is temporary by design.
Think of a play in a theatre. The audience sits still and moves nothing, yet without anyone watching there is no performance, only rehearsal. The cast does all the moving, yet sees nothing of the show as a whole. The play runs because both are there, and once it has been seen, the curtain comes down. Audience is consciousness, cast is nature, and the curtain is freedom.
This is a dualist position, and it runs straight into dualism's oldest problem: how can something that never acts have any dealings with matter? Samkhya's answer is purpose. The union exists for seeing and then for release, with no creator arranging it. Modern science does not explain nature by purposes like this, and nothing in physics or biology points to matter organising itself so that consciousness can be freed. On that point the idea has no modern match. The underlying split is still taken seriously, though. Neuroscience keeps explaining what brains do: perceiving, choosing, remembering. It has not explained why any of that is felt from the inside, which is the hard problem of consciousness. Physicalists expect the gap to close and dualists doubt it will. That question is still open.
