Meaning · English

From prakriti comes the great one; from that, the I-maker; from that, the group of sixteen. And from five among those sixteen come the five elements.

The question is how one undivided nature becomes the many things we meet. Samkhya answers with a sequence. Prakriti, nature before it shows itself, first yields mahat, 'the great one'. Gaudapada identifies it with buddhi, the intellect, the power to settle and decide. From intellect arises ahamkara, the I-maker, the sense that 'this is me, this is mine'. From the I-maker comes a set of sixteen. Gaudapada lists them. First come five tanmatras, the subtle potentials of sound, touch, form, taste and smell. Then five senses: ear, skin, eyes, tongue, nose. Then five organs of action: speech, hands, feet, excretion, procreation. Last is manas, the mind, which serves both groups. Then the five tanmatras alone produce the five gross elements. Sound gives space, touch gives air, form gives fire, taste gives water, smell gives earth. Count these with prakriti and purusha, the conscious witness, and you have Samkhya's twenty-five principles. In classical Samkhya no separate creator is needed: the unfolding happens within nature, occasioned by its proximity to purusha. Even intellect and ego belong to nature, not to consciousness.

Picture a seed in the soil. First a single shoot appears, then one firm stem, then a spread of branches, and from only some of those branches, the fruit. Nothing is added from outside. Each stage was folded inside the one before. Samkhya sees the world the same way: every layer is nature itself, opening out step by step.

As a story of physical origins, this sequence runs opposite to today's account. Cosmology and biology describe matter forming first, then living bodies, and only much later nervous systems able to judge and to say 'I'. The five elements are not chemical elements. There is no modern match for subtle sound or smell giving rise to space or earth. Read as a map of experience, it fares better. We know the world only through sense qualities, a point that empiricists and Kant each pressed in their own way. The most striking move is placing intellect and ego on the side of matter. Cognitive science broadly agrees that judging and self-modelling are brain processes. Samkhya still keeps awareness itself apart, in purusha. Whether that is needed is the hard problem of consciousness, and that question is still open.
