The intellect is ascertaining. Virtue, knowledge, dispassion and mastery are its form when sattva prevails. When tamas prevails, its form is the reverse of these.
What does the intellect do, and why does it work so differently in different people? Samkhya answers in two steps. First, buddhi, the intellect, is the faculty that settles things. It fixes 'this is a pot, that is a cloth.' Gaudapada reads that settling as its defining mark. Second, buddhi is made of prakriti, nature, so it carries nature's gunas, or strands. When sattva, the bright and clear strand, leads, buddhi takes four forms. Dharma is virtue; Gaudapada glosses it as kindness, giving, and the restraints and observances of Yoga. Knowledge is outer learning, and also inner knowing that purusha, consciousness, differs from nature. In his reading, only the inner kind frees. Dispassion is turning away from things once their cost in getting, guarding and losing is seen, and, in its inner form, seeing even nature itself as dreamlike. Mastery means unusual powers, such as becoming tiny or vast. When tamas, the heavy, dark strand, leads, each one flips: vice, ignorance, attachment, powerlessness. So buddhi has eight possible forms, bright and dark, and which ones show depends on which strand prevails.
A pair of reading glasses does one job: it brings the page into focus. Wiped clean, the lenses give sharp letters. Smeared with grease, the same lenses give a blur, and every word risks being misread. The lens is the intellect, whose job is settling what things are. Clean glass is sattva, giving the four bright forms. The smear is tamas, turning each into its opposite.
Samkhya makes an unusual move: the intellect, the part that judges and decides, belongs to matter, not to consciousness. Physicalist philosophy of mind and modern neuroscience would agree that judgment is a physical process. Decision-making and self-control are studied as brain functions. Samkhya parts company by placing awareness itself in a separate purusha. Most philosophers today reject that dualism, though the hard problem of consciousness, why any processing is felt at all, remains open. Tying virtue and clear knowing to the state of the judging faculty has a loose echo in psychology: exhaustion, stress and fixed craving are known to narrow judgment and weaken restraint. The powers of mastery, such as becoming tiny or vast, have no evidence behind them and no modern counterpart.
