The I-Maker's Twin Streams

Samkhya Karika 24

Meaning · English

Ahamkara is the sense of 'I' and 'mine'. From it a creation of two kinds goes forth: the group of eleven, and the five subtle elements.

The question is simple. Once nature has a thinking intellect, what produces the senses and the qualities they meet? Samkhya answers with ahamkara, literally the I-maker. Its mark is abhimana, self-claim: the constant tag of 'this is me, this is mine, I am doing it'. Samkhya holds that two families flow from this self-claim. The first is the group of eleven. Gaudapada reads these as the eleven powers called indriyas: five senses, five powers of action, and the mind that coordinates them. The second is the five tanmatras, the subtle elements. Gaudapada lists them as the bare qualities of sound, touch, visible form, taste and smell. One way to see the logic is that once there is an 'I', there must be a way for that 'I' to meet the world, and a world to be met. So one side is the instruments of experience and the other is its raw content. Gaudapada ends by asking what kind of ahamkara produces each family, which the next verse answers.

Picture a tree trunk that splits a little above the ground into two main limbs. One limb spreads outward into twigs and leaves that reach and touch. The other grows heavier and holds the fruit. The trunk is the self-claim. The reaching limb is the eleven powers of sensing, acting and minding. The fruit-bearing limb is the five bare qualities those powers will meet.

Cognitive science also treats the sense of self as something produced. It studies the feeling of ownership ('this is my hand') and of agency ('I did that') as constructions that can break down in illness. In that one respect, Samkhya is closer to modern views than one might expect, since it places the I-maker on the non-conscious side of its dualism, in changing nature, not in pure consciousness. The order differs, though. Neuroscience sees the self-model as built from the senses and the body. Samkhya places self-claim first and derives the senses from it. That ordering is better read as a claim about how experience is structured, with a subject side and an object side, than as a claim about biology. The five subtle elements have no match in physics. They are mostly close to what Locke called secondary qualities, which depend on a perceiver. Whether any of this explains awareness itself is the hard problem, and it remains open.
