Meaning · English
From the I-maker in its altered, bright form comes the group of eleven, made of clarity. From the source of the elements, the dark one, come the subtle elements. From the fiery one come both.
The previous step left a question open. If one I-maker gives rise to two very different things, the organs that perceive and the qualities that are perceived, what decides which one comes out? Samkhya answers with the three gunas, the strands of nature: sattva (clarity), rajas (motion) and tamas (heaviness). The ahamkara, the I-maker or sense of 'me', can lean toward any one of them. Gaudapada reads it this way. When clarity dominates, the I-maker is called vaikrta, the altered one, and it produces the eleven organs: five senses, five powers of action, and mind. Because they come from clarity, they are clean and fit to grasp their objects. When heaviness dominates, it is called bhutadi, the source of the elements, and it produces the five tanmatras: the bare potentials of sound, touch, form, taste and smell. When motion dominates, it is called taijasa, the fiery one, and from it come both, the eleven and the five. Gaudapada adds that clarity and heaviness are inert on their own. Only motion's push lets either side actually produce anything.
Picture a darkroom enlarger. One lamp shines through one negative. Clear patches let light through and print bright, and dense patches block it and print dark, yet nothing happens until the switch sends current to the bulb. The clear patches correspond to the bright I-maker that yields the organs, the dense patches to the dark one that yields the subtle elements, and the current to rajas, which drives both.
The idea that stands up best is structural. Samkhya places the senses, the powers of action and the mind inside nature, made of the same stuff as what they perceive. Consciousness itself, purusha, stays outside. This sits close to physicalism about cognition, the view that perception and thinking are physical processes, which neuroscience strongly supports. The two part ways on awareness itself: physicalism tries to explain it, and Samkhya treats it as a separate witness. There is no evidence that sense organs and sensory qualities come from a self-making principle split by three strands. Biology traces them to evolution and development. Pairing each sense with its own kind of quality has a loose parallel in the study of distinct sensory modalities. Why experience has a subject side and an object side at all is still unresolved, and is close to the hard problem of consciousness.
