The Ten Senses
Samkhya Karika 26
Meaning · English
The senses of knowing are called eye, ear, nose, tongue and skin. Speech, hands, feet, the organ of excretion and the organ of generation are called the senses of action.
What are the instruments through which a living being meets the world and acts on it? Samkhya's answer is a list of ten indriyas. The word is usually translated 'senses', but it covers any capacity that works through the body. Five are buddhi-indriyas, senses of knowing: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. Gaudapada explains the name. They 'come to know' their five objects: sound, touch, visible form, taste and smell. The other five are karma-indriyas, senses of action, named because they do something. Gaudapada gives each its work. Speech speaks. The hands carry out various kinds of work. The feet carry us to and fro. The organ of excretion releases waste. The organ of generation gives pleasure along with the begetting of children. The split is the point. Taking the world in and acting back on it are treated as two distinct kinds of power. Samkhya counts the indriya as the capacity, not the visible part. The eye is the power to see, not the eyeball.
Picture a warehouse with two sets of doors. Along one wall are receiving bays, each built for one kind of delivery. Along the other are dispatch doors, where goods leave. It is one building with two kinds of traffic. The senses of knowing are the receiving bays, one each for sound, touch, form, taste and smell. The senses of action are the dispatch doors: speaking, handling, walking, excreting and begetting.
The basic split holds up well. The nervous system does have sensory nerves carrying signals in and motor nerves carrying commands out. The brain has separate sensory and motor regions. The list itself has aged less well. Physiology counts more than five senses: balance, the sense of where the limbs are, temperature, pain, and signals from inside the body such as hunger. On the action side, modern physiology does not group excretion and reproduction with speech and grasping as one class of 'action organs'. Much of cognitive science also sees perceiving and acting as one tight loop rather than two separate sets. Samkhya places these powers in nature, not in consciousness. That fits the modern view that the senses are physical systems. Why their working is felt from the inside at all remains open. This is the hard problem of consciousness.
