That night they slept and took their rest. In the morning the great saint turned to Rama with a gentle smile and spoke softly. "I am well pleased with you, child of a royal line. Because I love you, I am going to give you every weapon of heaven. With these in your hand you will overcome any enemy who stands against you, even gods, spirits of the air, serpents and fiends. You are worthy to receive the weapons I have learned to use. First, son of Raghu, take the weapon of Vengeance, and the weapons of Fate and of Right. Take Vishnu's weapon of terrible power, and the thunderbolt of Indra, which no foe can stand before. Take Shiva's trident, sharp and dreadful, and that fearsome weapon called Brahma's Head."
He went on, naming them one after another. "Take these two clubs, glowing with soft flame, one called the Charmer and one the Pointed. Take Fate's net and the noose of Justice, which no one can overcome, and the great cord that Varuna loves to carry. Take the two thunderbolts, the Moist and the Dry. Take Shiva's dart and Vishnu's, the weapon of Fire called the Spire, and the Wind-God's dart called the Crusher. Take the Horse's Head and the Curlew's Bill, and two spears, the Invincible and the True. Take Sleep and Rest, the weapons of Sun and Rain, Kama's dart of Desire, and great Illusion. Take the Dew, which is the Moon's own weapon, the Mortal dart whose point is cold, and Slaughter, which never misses. All of these are yours, because you are dear to me."
Then the saint, pure of every stain of the world, turned to face the east. With a glad heart he handed over to Rama that whole company of powers, teaching him lore that even the gods find hard to win. He murmured the spell that calls these weapons and rules them. And one by one they came before the prince, each one standing there in a body of its own. They bowed to Rama and cried out with joy. "Noblest child of Raghu, look at us. We are your servants and your ministers." Rama received them gladly and welcomed them. "Stay always ready to my will," he told them. Then he went to the saint, paid him the reverence that was due, and walked on along the road.
As he walked, glad at heart and holding these mysterious arms, Rama spoke to the saint. "With these weapons, the gods themselves could hardly harm me. But now, best of saints, I want the powers that hold such weapons back." The sage, steady in his vows, called out the names of the charms that restrain the deadly arms. "Take True and Truly-famed, Bold and Fleet, Warder and Progress, Averted-head and Drooping-face. Take the Seen and the one that flies in secret, the weapon of a thousand eyes, Ten-headed and Hundred-faced, Star-gazer and Layer-waste. Take the Omen-bird, the Pure-from-spot, and the pair who wake and never sleep. Take the Guardian, the Gaper, Love and Golden-side. These bright ones can take any form they like. They are the sons of Krishashva, and you are worthy to command them."
Rama received them with joy, these powers to check a weapon or to strike an enemy down. They came near in a great crowd, each in a body of light. Some shone like burning coals, and some were like clouds of dark smoke. They spoke to him sweetly and humbly. "Rama, we are your servants. Tell us what you want." "Go wherever each of you pleases," he said. "But when I call, come to my mind quickly and help me when I need you." They bowed low, walked around him in reverence, agreed, and went away as they had come. Then, still walking, Rama asked the saint, "What is that wood by the mountain, dark as a cloud, full of deer and singing birds? The wild is behind us, and this land is lovely. Whose hermitage is it, where those wicked ones break your rites? I am here to guard your altars."
The hermit answered. "Long ago, Lord Vishnu, whom the gods adore, lived here in holy thought and hard penance. This old wood was called the Grove of the Dwarf, and when he reached perfection it took the name of the Perfect Grove. In those days Bali, the son of Virochana, defeated Indra, and in his pride he ruled all three worlds. When Bali began a great sacrifice, Indra and the gods were frightened. They came to Vishnu here and prayed to him. 'Bali, Virochana's mighty son, has begun his sacrifice. That demon king is rich beyond measure and generous to every living thing. Whoever comes to ask, from wherever and however, he never refuses. Use your own power of illusion, Lord. Take the form of a dwarf, and save us from this danger.'"
"So the god took the shape of a dwarf," the saint went on. "He came before Virochana's son and asked for nothing but three steps of land. Bali granted it. Then Vishnu began to grow, vast and terrible, through all the worlds. With one stride he measured the whole earth. With the second he spanned the sky. With the third he passed through heaven. So the demon king was thrown down to the world below, and the universe went back to Indra's rule. Because the god walked here in the form of a dwarf, I have always loved this grove. But demons haunt it and spoil every offering I try to make. It is yours, lion among men, to kill them. Today we will rest here. My hermitage is your home too."
Soon Vishvamitra, his face bright with joy, stood with Rama and his brother inside the holy wood. The hermits who lived there ran to him together. They honoured him, gave him water for his feet and a seat, and looked after the two princes kindly. After resting a while, the princes stood before him and asked, "Best of saints, begin the opening rites today. Let this Perfect Grove be made perfect again." So he began, holding back his senses and his hunger. The young men slept calmly, rose at dawn, prayed and bathed in the brook, then greeted him by the fire. "When should we drive off those Rovers of the Night?" they asked. The hermits answered, "Keep watch until the fifth day has passed. He has taken his vow, and will speak to no one." So the princes, refusing sleep, watched six days and nights.
On the sixth day, when the hour foretold had passed, Rama said, "Lakshmana, be steady and watchful now. The fiends have kept away so far, but before this day ends we will fight them." As he spoke, the altar fire flared up in sudden glory, shining over priests, grass, ladles and flowers, and the rite went on with its sacred words. Then a great roar echoed through the sky. Like huge storm clouds of the rainy season, wrapped in magic darkness, two fiends came rushing down, Maricha and Subahu, with their followers, raining thick blood as they came. Rama looked up at them. "Lakshmana, watch these man-eaters run from my weapon like clouds before the wind." He set an arrow, swift as thought, and struck Maricha in the chest. Carried by the spell, it hurled him a hundred leagues away into the ocean.
Rama watched Maricha writhing, mad with pain, and spoke again. "See, Lakshmana. That was the Mortal dart, the one that strikes with numbing cold. It has knocked him senseless, but left him breathing. These others, who love evil, who drink the blood they spill and delight in stopping holy rites, these I will kill." He took another arrow, the best he had, glowing with living fire, and it struck Subahu in the chest. He fell dead to the earth. Then Rama laid the Wind-God's own dart on his string, and every one of the demons was thrown down, and the hermits were afraid no longer. The saints honoured Rama the way Indra is honoured after a great victory. The rite was finished at last. Vishvamitra looked around, saw peace on every side, and said, "My joy is complete, Prince. You have done what I asked. This grove was perfect before. Now it is more perfect still."
