Hard Question, Right Teacher
Katha Upanishad 1.1.22
Meaning · English
Even the gods have doubted this, Death, and you yourself call it hard to know. No other speaker on it can be found who is your equal. No other boon is a match for this one.
Three words carry the verse. Vicikitsita is doubt, from a root for weighing something and being unable to settle it. Sujneya is su, easy, plus jneya, to be known: easily known. Vara is a boon, a thing chosen. Nachiketas has asked what becomes of a person after death. Yama, who is Death, has just told him the gods themselves were unsure and the matter is subtle. Nachiketas takes that warning and turns it around. Yama says it is hard, and Nachiketas agrees. Then he adds two reasons to go on. First, no teacher could match the one sitting in front of him, since Death is the one who would know. Second, no gift on offer is worth as much as the answer. So the difficulty becomes the proof that the question matters. The verse answers one problem: how a person keeps hold of a real question when the teacher advises him to ask something easier. Shankara reads Nachiketas as praising the subject through its difficulty, and as confirming that Yama is the right and only teacher for it. The verse asks the listener to keep a hard question open, and to look for the person who actually knows it.
A hiker reaches the trailhead and the ranger says the high pass is steep and few get over it. The hiker looks at the ranger, who crosses it every season, and says, then you are the one to guide me. The pass is the question of death. The ranger is Yama, and the warning becomes the reason to go.
1. Tonight, write down one question you have been avoiding because it feels too large or too sad. Use a single plain sentence. 2. Under it, write the name of one person who has actually lived near that question, such as a nurse, an elder, a priest or a friend who has grieved. 3. This week, ask that person for ten unhurried minutes. Say only that you want to understand, not to be comforted. 4. Afterwards, notice whether the difficulty has made the question feel smaller or more worth keeping.
A woman sits in a clinic corridor with her father's file in her lap. The doctor has just said, kindly, that nobody can say exactly how the last months will go. She had hoped for a date, a sequence, a rule. Now she is tempted to stop asking and talk only about appointments and tablets. The verse changes that moment in steps. First, it lets the doctor's answer stand as honest rather than as a closed door. Second, it separates two ideas that are easily muddled: a question that is hard, and a question that is not worth asking. Nachiketas treats the first as a reason to ask more carefully. Third, it sends her to look for the right person, a palliative nurse or a chaplain or an older relative who has sat through this, instead of the nearest person. Ordinary experience agrees that people who are told a thing is difficult often ask better questions afterwards. The verse does not promise an answer in that corridor, does not lessen her father's illness or her grief, and does not replace the doctor's care.
