Meaning · English

Ask for sons and grandsons who will each live a hundred years, for great herds, elephants, gold and horses, for a broad estate of land. And ask for yourself as many autumns of life as you want.

Three words carry the offer. Putra-pautra means sons and grandsons, a family that goes on after you. Shatayusha means hundred-lived, so the children are promised full lives, not just births. Sharadah means autumns, the way old speech counts years. Yama offers Nachiketas as many as he likes. The rest is a list a farmer or king of that age would envy: cattle, elephants, horses, gold, a wide stretch of land. The plain sense is a bribe, and a generous one. Nachiketas has asked what happens to a person after death. Yama has said even the gods were unsure, so he tries to turn the boy toward something easier. Every item is a way of staying safe from death: more years, more heirs, more property. The reason is that Yama is testing the boy. Shankara reads the offer as a trial of fitness: a person who could be talked out of the question by comfort is not ready for the answer. The verse covers each clause of the offer: family, livestock, gold, land, and a long life for Nachiketas himself. It asks the listener to notice how much of what we chase is really a wish to put death off.

A man is told the well in his yard has run dry, and a neighbor offers him as many full buckets as he likes, delivered daily. The buckets are kind and plentiful. But he asked why the well went dry, and the buckets answer a different question. Yama's gifts are the buckets, and Nachiketas' question is the dry well.

1. Tonight, write down three things you are working toward this month, such as money, a house, a person's good health. 2. Beside each, write the worry it is meant to quiet. 3. Read the worries aloud once, slowly. Notice which of them no amount of the thing would settle. 4. Spend five minutes sitting with that one, without trying to fix it.

At a naming ceremony, a grandmother listens as guests bless the baby with long life, many children and wealth. She thinks of her husband, who had all three and, near the end, asked her quietly what it had been for. The blessings are kind, and she says thank you to each guest. The verse lets her see something in that moment. Everything on the list is real and worth wishing for. Yama still places it as an offer made to turn a boy away from a harder question. So she can accept the blessings without taking them as the answer. Then she can ask what her own household is really reaching for, and talk with her family about what a long life is for, rather than only how to lengthen it. The verse does not promise that she will find an answer that day. It does not take away her grief for her husband. Ordinary experience does show that people can get what they asked for and still feel the question is untouched.
