Whatever wishes are hard to win in the mortal world, ask for all of them as you please. These women with their chariots and music, such as men can never obtain, I give you to be your attendants. Only, Nachiketas, do not ask me about death.

Yama now offers what no human can get. Three words carry the offer. Kama is desire, the pull toward something wanted. Durlabha is hard to obtain: dur, difficult, and labha, gain. Martyaloka is the world of the mortal, marta being one who must die. So Yama says: whatever the dying find out of reach, ask for it. He adds heavenly attendants, with chariots and musicians, and says men cannot get these by their own effort. The plain sense is a final and larger bribe. The offer carries one condition, stated last: do not ask about dying. Yama's reason is plain once the earlier verses are in view. He has tried long life, land, wealth and rule, and the boy has not moved. Now he turns to delight itself, and he guards the one subject he wants closed. His own fear shows in that request. What the verse asks of the listener is attention to the condition, not to the gifts. A generous offer with a fence around one question tells you which question matters. Shankara reads the pleasures as the whole range of enjoyment, human and heavenly, which Yama sets before Nachiketas to test whether his wish for knowledge is firm.

A shopkeeper pushes a tray of sweets across the counter to a child who asked for directions, and says take any, only do not ask which road leads out of town. The sweets are the heavenly pleasures. The one road the giver wants unasked is the question Nachiketas keeps.

1. Tonight, recall one time someone offered you a gift or favour right when you began asking a hard question. 2. Write in one line what you were asking and what you were handed instead. 3. Next time a pleasant distraction arrives while you are working on something difficult, pause for one slow breath and ask: what question is this answer replacing? 4. Then return to the question for five minutes before accepting the offer.

A man sits in a doctor's corridor with his father's scan results folded in his hand. A cousin beside him says, let's get lunch, forget the report, there's a new place nearby. The kindness is real. So is the wish to avoid the page. The verse shows what is happening. Yama offers every pleasure and asks for one silence in return. When comfort is pressed on you and one subject is ruled out, notice the subject. The man can take the lunch and still read the report. He can thank his cousin, eat, and then ask the doctor plainly what the scan shows. The offer does not have to be refused as an insult. It only must not replace the question. Ordinary experience agrees that distraction soothes for an hour and the worry returns unchanged. Yama's offer, in the Katha's telling, is a test, and Nachiketas passes it by staying with his question. The verse does not promise that facing the question will be easy, or that the answer will lift grief. It does not replace a doctor, who is exactly who the man in the corridor needs to ask.
