From where, brahmin, comes this keen and skilful understanding in one who does no work? With it you move through the world as a learned man, yet you walk like a child. Mostly people, in their pursuit of duty, wealth and pleasure, and in their wish to know, act only for a longer life, for fame, for prosperity. But you are able, wise, clever, handsome, and your speech is sweet as nectar. Still you do nothing and ask for nothing, like a dullard, a madman, a ghoul.
King Yadu has found a young brahmin wandering fearless and cheerful, and he cannot make the sage add up. In Krishna's retelling, Yadu asks him three things. First, where does the understanding come from? The word is buddhi, from budh, to wake: a mind awake and sharp. Yadu notes that the sage is an akarta, a non-doer, from a, not, and kartr, the one who does. Normally sharpness is earned by labour, so a sharp mind with no labour behind it is a puzzle. He also says the sage moves like a child, balavat, with no guard, no scheming and no worry about how he looks. Second, Yadu says what he expects of people. They chase dharma, duty, artha, wealth, and kama, pleasure, and even their wish to learn serves the same ends: long life, name, prosperity. That is the usual reason to strive. Third, Yadu lists the sage's gifts: capable, wise, skilled, beautiful, sweet-spoken. Such a man could win anything, yet he wants nothing. The comparison to a dullard, a madman and a ghoul is how the world would read such a man, and Yadu says it to show he is not fooled. The commentators take it as a courteous way of voicing the puzzle. The question is asked so the sage will explain himself, and his answer is the twenty-four teachers. The questions ask the listener to notice the ordinary reasons behind their own effort.
A railway platform at rush hour: everyone hurries for a train, checking watches and tickets. One man sits on a bench, unhurried, with no bag and no worry. You wonder if he is lost or has already arrived. The sage is that man, and Yadu is the one who stops to ask.
1. Today, before one task you usually do on autopilot, ask what it is for: money, praise, safety, or the thing itself. Just name it. 2. When you meet someone whose choices look odd to you, ask one kind, curious question before forming a judgment. 3. Tonight, spend five minutes sitting without a phone or task, and notice what in you wants to start something.
A man stands at his cousin's wedding hearing relatives murmur that the cousin gave up a salaried post to grow vegetables and has wasted himself. The man nearly nods along. Yadu's way changes the moment in steps. First, he notices the yardstick the murmuring uses: income, standing, a long comfortable life. These are the same three Yadu names. Second, he sees that his own unease is a kind of measuring too. Third, instead of labelling his cousin, he does what Yadu does: he goes over, admires what is plainly good, and asks how he came to this. He may learn something, or he may learn that the choice is shaky. Either way he asks first. Ordinary experience confirms that people explain others by their own motives, and a plain question corrects this better than a guess. The limit: the text does not promise that every person who does little is wise, and it does not say the cousin's contentment is real or that leaving work suits everyone. It teaches only that the sage in Yadu's story had a reason worth asking about.
