People all around are burning in the forest fire of craving and greed. You are free of it and are not scorched, like an elephant standing in the waters of the Ganga. You, brahmin, are the one we ask: tell us the cause of the joy you have in your own self. You are untouched by the things that grip others, and you stand alone with yourself. Tell us.

King Yadu speaks to the avadhuta, in Krishna's retelling. His first picture is a forest fire. Kama is craving, from kam, to want. Lobha is greed, the grasping for more. Together they are the dava-agni, the forest fire, that spreads through people and leaves them burning. Yadu says the avadhuta walks through the same crowd and is not scorched. Then comes the elephant. A heated elephant stands in the Ganga and the heat cannot reach it. The avadhuta stands in something that works the same way. Next Yadu asks his question outright. He wants the cause of the ananda, the joy, that rests in the self. He also names what is missing in the man: sparsha, touch or contact. The avadhuta has no clinging contact with sense objects. He is kevala, alone, resting on himself alone. Yadu's earlier verses noticed that the avadhuta has no work, no gain and no fame, and still seems glad. Here the puzzle is put plainly: what feeds this joy? The question sets up the twenty-four teachers. The reader is asked to hold the question open and see what answer the avadhuta gives. The fire is craving and greed, not the world itself.

A farmer stands waist-deep in a river while stubble burns along the bank. Smoke drifts over him and the heat is real, but the water around him keeps him cool. The burning field is craving and greed in the crowd. The water is the joy the avadhuta rests in.

1. Once today, in a shop, on your phone or at a gathering, notice the exact moment you want something you did not want ten minutes ago. 2. Say to yourself, quietly, "that is the fire." Do not argue with it. 3. Take three slow breaths and ask where you last felt content without owning anything new. 4. Note that place in a line on paper, and read it tonight.

A retired schoolteacher sits at a relative's housewarming. All around her people talk about plot prices, promotions and whose son earned more. She feels her jaw tighten and a small, hot wish that her own life looked different. The verse would change that moment step by step. First she names what is happening: this is wanting, not a fact about her life. Next she asks Yadu's question of herself, what in her is already glad when nothing is being added? Then she lets the answer, her tea, a granddaughter's laugh, a quiet morning, sit beside the heat instead of beneath it. She does not need to leave the party. Ordinary experience agrees that constant comparison leaves a person restless, and that noticing the restlessness loosens it a little. The verse does not promise that the wanting stops, or that money worries, grief or illness vanish. Where a real need is pressing, such as rent, treatment or a doctor's advice, it still has to be met.
