Meaning · English
Questioned in this way by Yadu, who honored brahmins and had a sharp mind, and welcomed with respect, the brahmin answered the king, who stood bowed in humility. He said: "O king, I have many gurus, each taken up through understanding. Having drawn understanding from them, I wander the earth freed. Hear them from me."
Three words carry the passage. Guru is the usual word for teacher, and tradition reads it as the one who removes darkness. Buddhi is understanding, from budh, to wake up. It is the faculty that notices and draws a conclusion. Mukta means freed, from muc, to let go. In Krishna's retelling, King Yadu has just asked the wandering brahmin how he became so wise without doing anything. The brahmin first notes how Yadu asks: honoring brahmins, quick of mind, humble, respectful. Then he answers. He has many gurus, not one. He did not find them by joining a school or taking a vow. He took them up through buddhi, meaning he looked at ordinary things and woke up to what each one showed. From that understanding he is free, and he wanders the earth that way. Then he asks Yadu to listen. This answers Yadu's question about where such wisdom comes from. The source is attention, not a single teacher. The commentators read the freedom as a result of understanding that was actually taken in, not merely heard. The verse asks the listener to be as humble and as awake as Yadu was while asking.
A traveler walks through an orchard with an empty cloth bag and takes one fruit from each tree he passes. By evening the bag is full and he owes no single tree anything. The orchard is the world's many teachers, and the bag is understanding that picks up what each one offers.
1. Choose one ordinary thing you will see today: a tree, a kettle, a stray dog, a neighbor's gate. 2. Watch it for two full minutes, without your phone. 3. Ask one question: what does this do that I do not? 4. Write the answer in one sentence on paper, and read it again tonight.
A woman sits on a hospital bench waiting for her father's scan results. The corridor is slow. She notices a cleaner working his mop in even, unhurried strokes, never glancing at the clock. Usually she would not have looked at him at all. The brahmin's way begins with exactly that look. She lets the cleaner be a teacher without making him one aloud. She sees steadiness in him. She asks whether she could have a little of it for the next hour. She lets her shoulders drop a bit, slows her breathing, and goes back to waiting with one small thing learned. That is understanding taken up from what was already in front of her, as the text describes. Ordinary experience confirms that people often learn more from watching someone calm than from being told to be calm. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise the results will be good, and it does not take away fear or grief. The freedom the brahmin claims is the text's own teaching, and it does not replace the doctor who is about to speak.
