Uddhava, all your questions have been well answered. What more is there to say at length? This is the mark of merit and fault: to see merit and fault is itself the fault, and merit is to be free of both.
Three words carry the verse. Guna is merit, a good quality. Dosa is fault, a flaw. Drishti is seeing, a way of looking that becomes a habit. Krishna first tells Uddhava that his questions have all been rightly settled, so there is no need to go on talking. Then he gives the short test behind the long lists of qualities and faults in the earlier verses. Looking at everything through the lens of good and fault is itself the fault. What he calls merit is to stand free of both, to have set the sorting aside. The commentators take this as the closing point of that long run of definitions. Krishna has spent many verses naming what is wise and what is foolish, and now he says what all that naming was for. It was a ladder, and the habit of weighing and grading is what the climber leaves behind. This is not an invitation to stop telling right from wrong in conduct. It is about the mind that keeps tallying, approving and condemning, and so stays tied to what it tallies. Krishna answers the question behind Uddhava's questions: how to be finished with asking. He asks Uddhava to hold the distinctions lightly and not make a home in them.
A man keeps wiping a window, hunting every smear and fingerprint, and never looks through it at the garden beyond. The glass is the mind's sorting of good and fault. The garden is what the verse points toward once the sorting stops running the show.
1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for five minutes and recall your day. 2. Notice each time you filed something as 'good' or 'bad': a meal, a remark, your own work. 3. Pick one such judgment and drop it. Say, 'That happened,' and nothing else. 4. Notice whether your mind goes quieter or reaches for the next verdict.
A woman sings at a community festival. Afterward, driving home, she counts her two wrong notes and forgets the people who thanked her. Each judgment arrives as fact, and she cannot put them down. Krishna's teaching would change that drive in small steps. She would first see that her mind is sorting, and that the sorting is a habit, not the truth about the evening. Then she could let the verdicts pass without arguing for or against them, and attend to the road, the dark, the tune still in her head. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind busy grading itself has little room left for anything else. The teaching does not promise that mistakes stop mattering or that she will feel nothing about the evening. It does not replace practice, honest feedback, or care from a doctor when low mood hardens into something heavier. It speaks of a mind that no longer lives inside the scoring.
