Attachment Behind Each Birth
Bhagavad Gita 13.22
Meaning · English
The individual soul, seated in the material energy, desires to enjoy the three modes of nature that this energy produces. Its attachment to those modes is the cause of its birth in superior and inferior wombs.
Three words carry the verse. Purusha is the individual soul, the one who experiences. Prakriti is material nature, the stuff that bodies, minds and moods are made from. Guna-sanga joins guna, a strand or mode of nature, with sanga, a sticking or clinging. So it means attachment to the modes. Krishna tells Arjuna that the soul is seated in nature, lives inside it, and desires to enjoy what nature produces: its pleasures, its busyness, its dullness. Nature offers these. The soul's taste for them is what binds it. That attachment, Krishna says, is the cause of birth in higher and lower wombs. He does not blame the body, the world or fate. He names the clinging. The reason follows from the verses before it. Having said that nature does the doing and the soul is responsible for experiencing pleasure and pain, Krishna now explains why that experience keeps leading to new bodies. The listener is asked to see the cause plainly. Shankara reads the attachment as rooted in ignorance, so that knowing the self loosens it. Ramanuja reads it as a taste carried over from past deeds, which binds a soul that is truly distinct from matter. Madhva reads it as the bondage of a soul that depends on God, who frees it by grace.
A boat floats on a river. The current belongs to the river, and it moves everything on the water. But the rope tied to one particular post decides which bank the boat ends up against. The river is nature with its three modes, the boat is the soul seated in it, and the rope is attachment.
1. Pick one thing you reach for without deciding, such as your phone, a snack, or the television. 2. Today, when the reach begins, pause for ten slow breaths before you act. 3. Name the pull in a word: restless, tired, bored, or comfort-seeking. 4. Then do the thing or leave it, and notice how you feel ten minutes later.
A woman gets home after a long day, stands at the open fridge, and eats cold rice without being hungry. Nobody chose this. The verse would slow the moment into steps. First, she is inside a body and a mood, and these arrive by themselves. Second, the tiredness and the pull are produced by that body and mood, as the verse says of nature. Third, the cause of the habit is not the rice but her clinging to the relief it gives. Naming that clinging gives her a small gap before the next handful. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired person finds restraint harder, and that a pull noticed is easier to refuse than one obeyed. The verse does not promise that the craving will vanish, that one pause will end a long habit, or that it replaces a doctor when eating or mood is a real illness. Its claim about higher and lower births is the text's own teaching, and it is offered here as that.
