The Witness Within the Body
Bhagavad Gita 13.23
Meaning · English
Within this body there dwells the Supreme Lord, the witness, the permitter, the supporter, the transcendental enjoyer and the great controller, who is also spoken of as the Supreme Soul.
Krishna gives the one inner presence six names, and each name teaches something. Upadrashta, the witness, comes from seeing from close by: one who sits near and watches without being dragged into the act. Anumanta, the permitter, is the one who consents; nothing in the body runs without that sanction. Bharta, the supporter, is the one who holds up and sustains. Bhokta, the enjoyer, is called transcendental, which sets it apart from the embodied soul of the previous verses, who is hungry for what nature offers. Maheshvara is the great lord and controller. Paramatma, the Supreme Soul, gathers the rest: the Self beyond the self, living in this very body. Krishna's reason follows from what he has just said. He has described a soul tangled in nature's qualities, enjoying and suffering. Arjuna might conclude that this tangle is all a person is. Krishna adds that another presence sits in the same body, close by and untouched. Shankara reads the witness and the individual Self as one, with no real difference. Ramanuja reads the Lord as the inner controller who stays distinct from the soul, which depends on him as a body does. Madhva holds that the Lord remains eternally different from the soul even while dwelling in it.
A grandmother sits on the verandah while the family bustles through the house. She sees everything, and nothing big happens without her nod. The roof she sits under holds them all. She wants nothing from the noise. The Supreme Soul stands to the body the way she stands to the household.
1. Pick one ordinary stretch today, such as the walk to the bus or washing dishes, and give it five minutes. 2. Silently say, 'Something here is watching.' Notice what the body is doing, and which feeling is passing through. 3. When irritation or worry rises, pause for one breath before answering. Notice that you can see it as well as feel it. 4. At night, recall one moment from the day when you watched your own reaction. Do not grade it.
A man sits in his parked car outside his house after a bitter phone call with his brother about their father's land. His jaw is tight, his heart is pounding, and he is composing sentences he will never say aloud. Krishna's teaching changes this moment in steps. First, there is the anger, and there is also the one who knows there is anger. That second presence is what Krishna names as witness. Second, nothing in the body moves without its permission, so the man is not simply swept along. Third, the same presence supports him; he does not have to hold it up by force. Ordinary experience confirms that naming a feeling to oneself often loosens its grip a little. The limit is plain. The teaching does not make the anger vanish, settle the land dispute or mend the brothers. It does not replace a doctor if the pounding heart or the sleeplessness persists. What it offers is a place to stand while the storm passes, before the man walks indoors.
