Not Wounding Yourself
Bhagavad Gita 13.29
Meaning · English
One who sees the Supreme Soul present equally everywhere does not degrade the self by the mind, and so reaches the supreme destination.
Three words carry it. Samam means equally, level, the same in every place. Hinasti means to injure or degrade, and the verse says one can do this to oneself, by one's own mind. Gati means a going, a destination, where a life ends up. Krishna tells Arjuna that a person who sees God, the Supreme soul, present equally in everyone and everywhere, does not harm the self through the mind. Because of that, the person reaches the highest destination. The reason sits in the word equally. If the same presence is in the neighbour, the rival and oneself, then contempt for another is contempt aimed at what also lives in you. The mind that ranks beings and looks down on some lowers the one who holds it. Seeing evenly stops that wound. The verse asks the listener to let this seeing govern how the mind treats others, and so itself. Shankara reads the self-injury as ignorance that hides the real Self, leaving a person bound to rebirth. Ramanuja takes it as the soul being dragged down by a mind attached to the body and its differences. Madhva stresses that seeing the Lord present in all is a path of devotion and knowledge together.
A lamp flame is carried from room to room in one house. Each room is lit by the same light. Someone who curses the dark corner and smashes a lamp in anger only leaves their own house dimmer. The one presence in every room is the Supreme soul, and the smashed lamp is the mind's harm to itself.
1. Today, pick one person you hold a quiet grudge against or look down on, a colleague, a relative, a stranger on your commute. 2. When their name or face comes up, pause for the length of one slow breath and tell yourself silently: the same presence is in them as in me. 3. Notice what your mind does to you afterward: the tightness, the rehearsed insult, the sour mood. Notice whether it eases even a little. 4. Repeat it once more this week with someone you do like, and see whether it feels different.
A man sits in a waiting room at a hospital, furious at the cousin who has not come to see their sick father. He replays the argument, builds the case against him, and his chest tightens. The verse, as Krishna gives it, turns the question. The cousin is not made lesser by the man's contempt, but the man is the one carrying it, hour after hour. Krishna's word is that the mind can injure its own self. Seeing the same presence in the cousin does not excuse the absence. It stops the man from spending his night inside a verdict. He can say what he needs to say later, calmly, and sit with his father now. Ordinary experience agrees that resentment is tiring to hold and that a mind busy with contempt has little left for the person in front of it. The verse does not promise that the cousin will change, that the father will recover, or that grief will lift. Nor does it replace a doctor or counsellor for someone whose anger or low mood is heavy and lasting. What it offers is a way of not adding a second wound to the first.
