Wealth Cannot Fill Him

Meaning · English

Wealth cannot satisfy a person. We will have wealth anyway, now that we have seen you, and we will live as long as you allow. But the boon I chose is the one I want, and no other.

Three words carry the verse. Vitta is wealth, from a root meaning to find or obtain: what comes to you. Tarpaniya means able to be satisfied, filled, from a root for being content. Vara is a boon, from a root meaning to choose. Nachiketas tells Yama that a human being is not made content by wealth. Yama has just offered him riches, long life and companions. The boy answers in two parts. First, wealth is no worry: he stands before Death himself, and wealth will come and life will last for as long as Yama decides. Second, since wealth cannot fill a person, getting it would settle nothing. He keeps to the one boon he already chose, the question about what happens after death. The reason he gives is plain. The things offered are real, but they do not reach the want he has. He asks only for what answers it. Shankara reads the remark about living as long as Yama rules as the boy's point that length of life rests with Death, so it is no gift worth asking Death for.

A man sits down to a feast while sick with a fever only one medicine can cure. Every dish is rich and every plate is offered with a bow, yet none of it touches the illness. Wealth is the feast, and Nachiketas's question is the illness he cannot set aside.

1. Tonight, write down the one thing you have wanted most this year. Under it, write what you believe having it would give you. 2. Ask whether that thing could give it, or whether you would still be looking afterward. 3. This week, the next time you want to buy something, wait one full day. Notice whether the wanting is the same the next evening. 4. Keep the answer to yourself. Just notice.

A woman signs the papers selling her family's old shop. The price is good, better than she hoped. She walks out to the street and feels oddly flat, as if something she expected to arrive did not. Yama's offer and the boy's reply speak to that moment. The text says wealth cannot fill a person, and it does not say wealth is bad. She can be glad of the money, pay the debts, and settle her mother's care. What the verse changes is the expectation she carried: that the sum would answer the question under the sale, which was who she is without the shop. Seeing that, she can stop waiting for the money to feel like more than it is, and ask the other question openly. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a raise or a windfall is usually taken as normal within weeks. The verse does not promise that asking the deeper question will ease her grief, and it does not say money is unimportant when rent or medicine is due.
