Meaning · English

Though struck again and again by creatures driven by their fate, the steady one knows this and does not step off his path. That is the vow I learned from the earth. All his effort is always for others; his whole birth is for others alone. So the good person should learn from the mountain, and be a pupil of the tree, how to live for another.

The avadhuta, in Krishna's retelling, is telling King Yadu what the earth taught him. Three words carry it. Dhira, the steady one, is someone who holds firm while being shaken. Daiva means fate, what has been set in motion beforehand. Parartha means for the sake of another: para is other, artha is purpose. The first half gives the earth's vow, called vrata. Creatures walk on it, dig it, and strike it, and the avadhuta says they act as their own fate drives them. The steady person knows this and does not leave his path. He does not return blow for blow, and he does not abandon what he set out to do. The second half turns to the mountain and the tree. Everything the mountain holds, its streams, its forests, its animals, is for others. The tree gives fruit and shade to whoever comes. A good person, the avadhuta says, takes both as teachers, so that every effort and his whole way of being is for others. The reason is the question Yadu asked: how does a free man live among people who bother him? The answer is steadiness without bitterness, and giving without keeping count. The text asks the listener to see harm as the push of fate in others, and to let their own work serve others.

A hillside at midday: people trample its path, goats graze it, a stranger sits under its one tree and eats his bread in the shade. The hill does not choose its visitors or complain of them. The steady person is the hill, the shade is the work done for others, and the trampling is every careless blow.

1. Choose one irritation you expect today, such as a rude remark, a crowded bus, or a slow queue. Before it happens, tell yourself that the other person is moving under pressures you cannot see. 2. When it comes, pause for one slow breath and carry on with what you were doing. 3. Before bed, name one task from today that you did only for someone else. Give it ten more minutes tomorrow.

A grandmother is cooking for a houseful of relatives in a tense week. Someone snaps at her about the salt. Someone else walks through the kitchen without a word of thanks. Her hands are tired and her pride is stung. The verse offers her a different reading of the moment. The snapping comes from people pushed by their own worries and fatigue, as the text says of creatures moved by fate, and it need not be taken as a verdict on her. So she lets the remark fall and keeps cooking. She finishes the meal because feeding them is her work, not because she needs praise. Ordinary experience bears out part of this: a remark taken less personally loses its grip faster, and work done for people we love often tires us less than work done for show. The limit is plain. The verse does not say hurt is unreal, and it does not ask anyone to stay where they are being abused. It describes a steadiness of path, and it leaves room for speaking up, asking for help, or resting.
