Clear by nature, soft, and sweet, a holy ford for people: the sage is water's own kin. Whoever sees him, touches him, or speaks his name is made clean.

The avadhuta tells King Yadu, in Krishna's retelling, what water taught him. Three words carry it. Svaccha is clear, with no mud stirred up in it. Snigdha is smooth and tender, the softness of oil or butter, which does not scrape. Tirtha comes from tr, to cross: a ford, a crossing place, and later any place of pilgrimage. First come the qualities. Water is clear by its own nature, gentle to the touch, and sweet to drink. So it becomes a crossing place for people. The sage is called water's friend, meaning its kin: clear in mind, gentle in manner, sweet in speech, and so a ford others can get across by. Then comes what he does. He purifies. Water cleans whoever looks at it, touches it or speaks of it, and the sage cleans by being seen, by being touched, and by being praised. The commentators read these as the sage's three ways of reaching people. The avadhuta is listing what a free wanderer takes from the world. Water shows him that a holy person need not be loud or busy, because the work is done by what he is. The listener is asked to notice who leaves them clearer, and to want that quality.

A public drinking tap at a bus stand. It is cool and clear, and it asks nothing. Strangers drink, rinse their hands and faces, and walk on lighter. The sage is that tap: his clearness and gentleness do the cleaning, and he does not have to try.

1. Tonight, pour a glass of plain water and drink it slowly. Notice its clearness and how little it asks of you. 2. Think of one person after whom you felt calmer. Ask what they did, or did not do. 3. This week, do one thing like that: answer one irritating message gently, or say one true good thing about someone who is absent.

A young woman arrives alone in a new town for work. It is night, her bags are heavy, and she knocks at her landlady's door, close to tears. The landlady says little. She shows her the room, puts a glass of water on the table, and says the tap needs a firm turn. The verse speaks to that moment. First, the landlady is not stirred up herself, so her clearness gives the young woman something steady to look at. Second, her gentleness asks for nothing back. Third, the effect comes without any lesson being given: the young woman breathes out and sits down. Ordinary experience agrees that a calm person in the room settles the people near them. The verse says the sage purifies by being seen, touched and spoken of. In the same way, one steady presence changes a bad hour. The verse does not promise that the homesickness will lift, or that the town will turn out kind. It does not replace a doctor if the fear in the night is more than the ordinary weight of a first day.
