Weighing What to Give Up
Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 37.8
Meaning · English
Give up one member for the sake of the family. Give up a family for the sake of the village. Give up a village for the sake of the country. And give up the whole earth for the sake of the self.
Three words carry this teaching. Tyaj means to let go or give up. Kula is the family or clan, the household a person is born into. Janapada is the wider realm, many villages under one rule. Atman, the last word, is the self: the one who has to live with whatever is done. The clauses run in a chain. One member may be given up for the family. A family may be given up for the village. A village may be given up for the realm. Then the last step turns inward, and even the whole earth may be given up for the self. Each time a smaller circle is set against a larger one, and the larger one counts for more. The final line says that all one could possess or rule is worth less than the self. Vidura says this to a king who cannot sleep, right after promising to speak words that are unwelcome but medicinal. His reason is a plain ordering of worth. Before holding on to something, or reaching for it, ask what it costs and what it serves. A smaller good kept at the price of a larger one is a bad trade. The text puts this as Vidura's counsel, and it asks the king to weigh before he acts.
A boat is taking on water in rough weather. The crew throws the heavy crates overboard first, because the boat matters more than the cargo, and the people aboard matter more than the boat. Each thing is let go to keep the larger thing that carries it. The verse sets smaller and larger holdings against each other in the same way.
1. Before starting something that matters today, stop for one minute and name the act in a single plain sentence. 2. Ask who is doing it, and what state they are in: tired, angry, eager, afraid. 3. Ask what it serves. Name the larger thing, such as your household, your work or your own steadiness. 4. If the act protects a small thing at the cost of a larger one, write down what you would let go. Then decide.
