Good for All, Good for Me

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 37.30

Meaning · English

To win the favour of the Supreme Being, one does what is good for all living creatures and also brings one's own happiness. This is the root from which success comes in everything a person sets out to do.

Three words carry the teaching. Hita means what is truly good for someone, not merely pleasing. Sukha means ease or happiness, and here it is one's own. Mula means root, the part under the soil that feeds everything above it. Vidura says that a person seeking the favour of the Supreme Being does what is hita for all creatures, and does what brings his own sukha as well. He does not set the two against each other. Together they are the root of success in every undertaking. Read this way, the person to avoid is the one who gives nothing back. He takes his own comfort from the world and puts no good into it. The teaching treats that as a root that has stopped drawing from anywhere shared, so whatever he builds has nothing to stand on. Vidura is talking to Dhritarashtra, a king who cannot sleep. The king wants his own sons to prosper, and he is quietly weighing that wish against the good of everyone else. Vidura's answer is that the narrow gain and the wide good are meant to travel together. A plan that serves only one side is a plan with a weak root, and a sleepless night is often where that is first felt.

A village well that everyone draws from. If one man hauls up water daily but never mends the rope or lends the bucket, the neighbours stop tending it, and the well decays. Success rooted only in taking dries the source that feeds it.

1. Tonight, before sleep, name one plan you are working on and ask who else it touches. Write down one person it helps besides you. 2. Tomorrow, do one small thing for someone that asks nothing back: carry a bag, answer a message, or share food. 3. Notice afterward whether the day's own work felt lighter or heavier. 4. Once this week, look at something you rely on, like a shared room or a friend's patience, and put something back into it.
