The Even-Minded Wanderer
Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 38.4
Meaning · English
One who never yields to anger, who stands above sorrow, who needs neither friendships nor quarrels, who takes praise and blame alike, and who keeps apart from the pleasant and the unpleasant, as if withdrawn from the world, is a true yogi of the wandering mendicant's way.
Vidura describes a bhikshu, a wandering renunciant who lives on alms, and he calls this person a real yogi. Three words carry the picture. Krodha is anger, the heat that rises when something is taken from us. Shoka is grief, the weight that stays after a loss. Yoga, from the root yuj, means to join or yoke: a mind held steady and not pulled in every direction. Now the clauses, none dropped. He does not give way to anger. He is above grief. He wants neither friendship nor quarrel, so he is not hungry for company and not hungry for a fight. Praise and blame land on him alike. He stays apart from what is agreeable and disagreeable, like someone already withdrawn from the world. Vidura says this to a king who cannot sleep. Dhritarashtra is torn by attachment to his sons, by fear of what they have set going, and by what people will say of him. Vidura holds up a person free of exactly those pulls. The reason he gives is the portrait itself: this steadiness, and not outward dress or ritual, is what makes a yogi real. Nilakantha reads the phrase 'as if withdrawn' as meaning inner detachment, not leaving home.
Think of a stone standing in a stream. Fast water, cold water, muddy water all pass around it, and the stone is neither pleased nor angered by any of them. The stream is praise, blame, loss and company. The stone is the mind that stays put while they pass.
1. Choose one moment today when you expect to feel a pull, such as a compliment, a criticism, or an annoying message. 2. When it arrives, name the pull silently in one word: pleased, stung, irritated, lonely. 3. Wait through three slow breaths before you answer or act. 4. At night, spend two minutes recalling whether the feeling had passed by the time you replied.
