Trust Has Limits
Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 38.8
Meaning · English
Do not trust someone who has not earned trust, and do not trust too far even someone who has. The danger that grows out of trust cuts a person off at the roots.
Vidura's teaching turns on three words. Viśvāsa is trust, a settled confidence that lets a person stop watching. Bhaya is danger, or fear, the harm that follows when that confidence is misplaced. Mūla is root, the part of a tree that holds it up and feeds it, so losing it is worse than losing a branch. The verse has two halves. First, no trust for the one who has shown he cannot be trusted. A person who takes and gives nothing back has already told you what he is. Second, no excess of trust even for the one who deserves it. Trust that has no limit leaves nothing in reserve, and people change, slip, or are pressed by events. Then comes the reason. The harm does not come from the other person alone. It comes from the trust itself, because trust is what lowers the guard. When it fails, it fails at the base of a life, not at the edge. Vidura speaks this to a king who cannot sleep. Dhritarashtra has leaned heavily on his sons and their schemes, and Vidura is telling him that leaning without checking is how a house falls. The teaching is measure: trust given in proportion to what has been shown.
A plank laid across a muddy ditch. You press it with one foot before stepping on it, and even after it has held you once, you still glance at it before the next crossing. Trust works the same way: tested first, then used with some care, never with your whole weight at once.
1. Today, think of one person who takes from you and gives nothing back. Write down, in one line, what they have actually done, not what you hope they will do. 2. Think of one person you trust fully. Name one small thing you keep for yourself, such as a spare key, a private plan, or a savings habit, so that nothing rests on a single person. 3. This week, before handing over something that matters, ask once: what has this person shown me, and over how long?
