Three Never Born
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 1.9
Meaning · English
Two unborn: the knower and the unknowing, ruler and powerless. A third unborn one joins enjoyer and enjoyed. The Self is endless, all-formed, doing nothing. Knowing these three is Brahman.
Three things never began. One knows and rules: the Lord. One does not know and cannot steer its own course: the individual soul. The third is nature, the stuff of the world, which links whoever experiences to whatever is experienced. Then the Self is described as without limit, present in every form, and not the doer of anything. The answer to the opening question is not any one of the three alone. Seeing all three together is what knowing Brahman means.
Picture a shadow-puppet show. The puppeteer knows the whole story and moves everything. A child in the audience is swept along, laughing and frightened, unaware of the hands. Between them sit the lamp-lit screen and the leather figures. The puppeteer is the Lord, the child is the soul, and the screen is nature. The show needs all three.
